3 antique Russian porcelain demitasse coffee cans / cups and saucers with handpainted Russian peasant scenes. Made in the Safronov factoroy, near Moscow circa 1830. Saucers More »
3 antique Russian porcelain demitasse coffee cans / cups and saucers with handpainted Russian peasant scenes. Made in the Safronov factoroy, near Moscow circa 1830. Saucers are approx 5 inches in diameter and 1 1/8 inches high. Cups are a little over 2 1/2 inches in diameter (excluding handle) and2 1/2 inches high. Saucers are deep enough to be used as bowls - possibly because 180 years ago people did use saucers as bowls. They are simply white porcelain with gold rims and a gold flower in the center. The cups are simple cylinders in shape. 2 have scrolling handles and one has an ear-shaped handle. Bottom and top rims + handles are gilded. Tops also gilded inside the cups. The outside of each cup is hand painted with a wonderful vignette of Russian peasants in a surrounding forest. Each scene is full of amazing action: in one a couple of youths are wrestling each other; in one a woman trudges along a path, one child hanging onto her arm, already weighed down by a basket full of produce, on her back, an enormous basket with a very big toddler sitting and lording it over the world. The 3rd cup depicts a woman in a marvellous costume being grabbed by a man in brown jacket and breeches with a big grey hat. Both wear wonderfully painted stockings, falling down over their shoes. The woman might be slapping the man for his uninvited advances. The book Russian Porcelains by Marvin Cross (page 257) claims that the Safronov factory produced pieces of the best quality - clearly these are good examples. THe porcelain itself is fine and white, with smoothe texture. The painting is outstanding. Each scene would be marvellous as a picture on the wall and all the more charming for the way they are executed. One gets a definate feel for Russian History with these scenes of ''the simple life''. The pieces are marked underneath with the blue underglaze Russian S (looks like a C with thickened edges). Inscribed squiggles / illegible writing can also be made out on most pieces. Condition is very good. Besides a small amount of wear to the gilding, there are no chips/cracks/damage/restoration of any sort. THere is a tiny scratch on the paint on the man in brown who is bothering the woman - see ''photos for magnified pictures. The Safronov factory opened in 1830 and closed early 1840''s. Status: For Sale Reference#: 3780 Condition: good Year: 1830 Title: ANTIQUE RUSSIAN 3 PORCELAIN CUP SAUCER HP SAFRONOV 1830 « Less

Antique Georgian porcelain lot consisting of two tea bowls and a plate / saucer. Made in Worcester, England, during the so-called Dr Wall period 1755 - 1783. Measurements: More »
Antique Georgian porcelain lot consisting of two tea bowls and a plate / saucer. Made in Worcester, England, during the so-called Dr Wall period 1755 - 1783. Measurements: Saucer is 4 1/2 inches diameter and 3/4 inches high; Larger bowl is 3 inches diameter and 1 3/4 inches high; Smaller bowl is 2 3/4 inches diameter and 1 1/2 inches high. All pieces are blue and white. They each have a double border of two concentric rings on the upper rim. The saucer, much like a shallow bowl (the custom was to drink the tea from the saucer, which t fore had curved sides, like a bowl) is very richly decorated in a Chinese influenced pattern with pavilions, fences, flowers, pagods, insects, rocks and flying birds. Great detail and variety. The mark underneath the saucer is the crescent moon with cross-hatching. T are other impressed marks, which are either meaningless or we do not know their significance. T is a tiny kiln crack on the rim of the saucer - see ''photos. The larger of the two cups has deep blue floral decoration with butterflies flitting amongst the flowers. The flowers include roses, morning glory and other typical flowers from an English garden. A small flower nestles at the inside bottom of the bowl. The mark underneath is a solid crescent moon. T are one or two minute fleabites on the bottom rim of this bowl - quite negligible considering the age of the piece. (see ''photos). The smaller of the two bowls has a flow blue decoration that includes flowers, grassy knolls and landscape and even two flow blue birds near a Chinese pagoda and landscape. It also has a small flower in the inside of the bowl. T is a wide range of shades of blue on this particular piece. The mark underneath is an open crescent. One or two negligible fleabites on the bottom rim. General condition is very good. Please enquire about the Dr Wall blue and white teapot that complements this group. Status: For Sale Reference#: 3694 Condition: good Year: 1755 Title: ANTIQUE WORCESTER DR WALL LOT TEA BOWL SAUCER 1755 - 83 « Less

Antique Old Paris cup and saucer with a handpainted vignette of mythological figures. Made in Paris, France, early 19th century. Cup is 3 1/4 inches tall. Saucer is almost 5 More »
Antique Old Paris cup and saucer with a handpainted vignette of mythological figures. Made in Paris, France, early 19th century. Cup is 3 1/4 inches tall. Saucer is almost 5 1/2 inches in diameter. Both cup and saucer have wonderful gilding covering a large part of the surface, including the inside of the cup. The gilding is embellished with a very refined pattern of flowers and foliage with the gilt. This must have been a very sophisticated technique as heating the gold was a complicated matter. It also indicates that this cup and saucer were intended to be particularly lavish and luxurious. The cup is elegant and narrow and typical of the Napoleonic era and similar cups from 1815 can be seen. The handle has a moulded white flower within the upper scroll, above which is a gilded, moulded embellishment, that looks partially like a cornucopia and partially like the helmet of a Roman warrior. The front of the cup has a wide reserve with a polychrom handpainted scene with characters from Classic mythology. A goddess playing with Cupid, lifts his quiver high in the air. Beautifully painted trees around them. The whole is clearly done by a highly competent artist and is most charming in character and execution. Like most Old Paris porcelain, t are no marks under the cup/saucer. Both cup and saucer are in very good condition. No chips/cracks/damage/restoration of any sort. Very minor gilt loss.
