A brass/bronze oval tobacco container. The top and two surfaces along the side have hammered lines of erotic art (all three scenes are different). The graceful lines are skillfully hand-tooled. The container is rather weighty for its size. Period: Ching (Mid 19th Century) Size: Height = 5 cm (2 inches), Length = 5.8 cm (2-1/4 inches), Width = 3.5 cm (1-3/8 inches) Condition: It has a dark patina. An attractive oval variegated horn tobacco or snuff box, with a silver escutcheon plate bearing the name John Cutberson. The box shows minor wear, with losses at the lid edge and minor abrasion from use and age but is otherwise in very good condition. A scarce and desirable piece of 18th C. A very unusual German Cigarette Case in that it is not trench art but commercially made and according to the date stamped on the drum faces in the motif, produced after WW!. Unusual in the sense that the Imperial family was in disgrace in the eyes of the German people for having lost the war. The Kaiser was banished from Germany and the new German government discouraged the use of Imperial crests, seals or flags. One can only guess that this case was made immediately after the war and then in only very limited numbers. An interesting piece of history and a great addition to a variety of collections. In very good condition showing light abrasion from use. One of the interior cigarette retaining springs is stretched and requires adjustment. Size 3.25" x 3.75". 1918-19.   « Less
