While the design in antique Agra rugs generally derives from the great carpet traditions of Mughal India and Safavid Persia, this one clearly draws on the abstract geometric designs of rugs from nearby China and Tibet. An allover pattern of irregular fine checkers in various reds, browns, blues, greens, and tans repeats endlessly across the field, framed only by a simple border zone in aubergine with an inner tan guard stripe. The spandrels above and the panel below the mihrab are rendered in a lovely abrashed green with serrated flower heads or rosettes in red and yellow. Various stylized vines make up several narrow borders set alternately against grounds of green and blue, and set off from one another by narrow red guard stripes. In terms of color alone this is an outstanding piece, but the rich palette is all the more effective in combination with the striking sense of design. Antique Silk Heriz, Persia, late nineteenth century - While the antique Heriz carpets of Northwest Persia are famed for their grand, highly geometric designs, the silk examples of this group tend to be far more elegant and classical in their drawing, as this magnificent carpet demonstrates so well. The field has an allover pattern of split calyx arabesques. The arabesques done in gold are arranged as quatrefoils, with pairs of crimson arabesques pendant beneath them. The remaining areas of the rich navy ground are filled with tiny flowers and smaller palmettes. Quartered quatrefoils serve as subtle cornerpieces. A delicate, linear flowering vinescroll comprises the man border, all set against an ivory ground with red guard borders for added framing effect. The lush color here is not only due to the quality of the dyes, but above all to the luxuriant silk pile which maximizes the intensity and depth of the palette.
