From a magnificent book published in the early 1920''s of Hohlwein''s works. The introduction for the book reads as follows: Born in Munich, Germany in July, 1871, he started his professional career as an architect, but in 1895 was induced by his love of color and the lure to produce colorful posters, to desert his profession and to begin his new career asa poster designer. Immediately he established for himself an enviable reputation and soon was recognized as the leader in the field. He has retained this distinction ever since and today is cnsidered not only the foremost poster designer in Germany, but one of the best inthe world. During the long period of activity in which he produced many hundred posters, he has hardly ever failed to produce a thing of beauty and charm. His compositions are always striking and original, his color harmonies unusual and superb and his technique at once recognizable and inimitable. Undoubtedly, many of his productions bear the distinctive mark of an architect, others again are endowed with the qualities of mural decorator, while others denote the frequency with which he has been influenced by the Japanese print. Throughout his entire career as poster artist, he has successfully maintained a high standard of excellence in his work, whether it be a dignified poster to exploit a war loan, or a humorous sketch to advertise a shoe polish. His versatility seems unbounded. One needs only glance though the present collection of his works to realize and appreciate the remarkable and charming qualtiies of the modern decorative poster designer, Ludwig Hohlwein.'' This volume was owned by the General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen of New York who for some unknown reason stamped each page of the book with their seal. I have attempted to photograph each plate well and to show where the seal shows on the plate - if at all. The plates are all in pristine condition, with no foxing or tearing. The colors of the book are slightly more punchy than the Hohlwein prints we have here in the gallery - I assume that the reproduction skills of the printer are the reason for that. The colors are as they appear in the photos. Please e-mail a request for any additional photos. (On a personal note - I have fallen in love with the work of Hohlwein: although I consider myself fairly well versed in art history, I had never heard of Hohlwein before I opened my gallery. His work brings me great pleasure - it is precise, humorous and colorful.) These particular prints measure 5.5 x 7.5 inches each, and framed together, their size is approx. 16.5 x 13 inches. T.A. Steinlen, The Poster Hanger circa 1910 This sepia toned print is of a poster hanger, literally hanging off the wall while affixing a poster to the wall adjacent to a curious neighborhood woman. Like many of Steinlen''s works, this one doesnt fail to bring a smile... the image measures 6.5 x 9.5 inches, and the framed measurement is 13 x 14 inches. ''The years around the turn of the century in Paris were the great periods of the ''artist-reporter'' those painters who found their inspiration in the events of every-day life. One of the very greatest of these was Steinlen. With an eye for movement and gesture, with the ability to translate the scenes of the cafes, bars and street corners into pictorial composition, in his drawings he created a pattern of expressive shape, swift shading and telling details of facial expression which is redolent with the whole atmosphere of the period. Much of his strength and effectiveness of his work derives from the fact that, like Daumier, he was able to combine a clear sense of style with humour and social understanding '' (Weston) Steinlen was born in Lausanne, 1859; died in Paris, 1923. Over the course of his artistic career Steinlen created over 380 original lithographs and 115 etchings ... His style, though personal and distinctive, was influenced at various times by his illustrious contemporaries Degas, Vallotton, Toulouse-Lautrec, Rodin, Forain and Munch. His subject matter includes street life, political propaganda and studies of his beloved cats. In terms of public visibility, Steinlen was the Norman Rockwell of the 1890''s and as a prolific illustrator he created drawings for nearly thirty magazines and newspapers. His images are marked by originality, simplicity, and compassion which make them alluring and engaging. Inspired by daily life, he often used his own family in his poster designs. In 1881, at the age of twenty, Theophile Alexandre Steinlen moved from his native home in Lausanne Switzerland to Paris -the heart and soul of late 19th C Europe- where he became a most highly celebrated and influential artist in both the French Belle Epoque and Art Nouveau era. This print, and every other print, poster or piece of ephemera we sell is authentic, non reproduction and vintage. Let us know if you want additional information or more photos. The region of France called the Bagnoles de L'orne features prominently in a variety of posters by some of the best poster artists of the late 1800's and early 1900's. We More »
The region of France called the Bagnoles de L'orne features prominently in a variety of posters by some of the best poster artists of the late 1800's and early 1900's. We have sold other posters of the region, but find this one, by Leandre to be the most lyrical we have seen. It measures 41 x 30 inches, was produced in 1922, is linen backed and in excellent condition. Of the artist, Charles Leandre, Wikipedia writes: "Charles Lucien LŽandre (1862 - 1934), French caricaturist and painter, was born at Champsecret (Orne), and studied painting under Blin and Cabanel. From 1887 he figured among the exhibitors of the Salon, where he showed numerous portraits and genre pictures, but his popular fame is due to his comic drawings and caricatures. The series of the "Gotha des souverains," published in Le Rire, and Leandre's other work like that seen in L'Assiette au Beurre placed him in the front rank of modern caricaturists.
