A rare and unusual piece, this glazed antique brick is deeply carved on the face with a knight on horseback thrusting his lance. It is an design similar to ones found at the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works on tiles made by Henry Chapman Mercer. Unmarked, this is most likely made by the Stark Brick and Tile Company of Ohio. Flanking the knight is a partial fleur de lis so this was probably meant to be a running pattern. It is coverd in a deep glossy cobalt blue glaze. Rarely do these glazed brick tiles surface, as most are in installations. This one appears to have never been used. The condition is very good. It has some light scuffing to the high points of the shiny glaze and a couple of shallow edge chips. This is a hefty piece weighing over five pounds! This Victorian tile was designed by Arthur Osborne and although this same image can be seen on tiles marked J. and J.G Low, this one is unmarked and was probably made at the Trent Tile Company of Trenton New Jersey. It depicts an old bearded Jewish man in a yamulke. It is known in the trade as the Shylock tile. Molded in a very high relief, the condition is excellent, with only a tiny nick to the eyebrow. With it''s ecclesiastic design, it''s original intent was probably for a church. It has been professionally mounted and framed in a gold and cherry finish.
