Capturing the organized nature of the exhibition at sports and gymnastic festivals, this unknown artist has produced a well-balanced, strongly colored image of athletes. The geometric forms of their bodies inter-link with a precision that bespeaks of the strength and prowess necessary to participate in such an event, and also reflects some of the grace and elegance the spectators so admired. Typical of the style of Art Deco and wonderful in a gym or work out room, or, frankly, in any other room where grace, elegance, style and panache are needed. Beautifully framed in an Art Deco style, this piece recently took pride of place in a Montreal designer showcase.

By design, travel posters must express, in clear, concise and easily understandable graphic language, who the carrier is, where there destinations are, how they get there, and why you would want to use them. Whether we are talking about the great posters of the French (or Swiss, or Italian) railways from the early 1900's, or the early Canadian Pacific Railway (or airline) posters, or mid-century travel posters - like this one for the Belgian 'cities of art' - the posters had to grab your attention, and make you want to travel.

This oversized poster was recently purchased in Europe. Published in Paris by Atelier Faria, it was the publicity poster for an entertainer who advertised that he 'could do everything'. What 'everything' consisted of is unclear, but given the fact that his head is a globe and he seems to be thinking hard, we think he must have been some type of clairvoyant. The poster has some signs of wear, a few repairs, but is generally in very good condition.

A lovely and vibrant offset poster printed in 1965, this Italian poster actually advertises a French soap: Sapone di Marsiglia is Italian for Soap from Marseilles. The rooster seems to knowingly suggest that if you use this particular brand of cleaning product you will be very clean indeed. Mounted on linen and in A condition this poster would be great in a kitchen, country home, bar, restaurant or any space which is in need of color, light and good humor.

A poster, measuring approx. 53 x 38 inches, of a wonderful sailing ship, seemingly under full sail, perhaps accompanied by a pontooned airplane escort on a seemingly calm sea. Given our fairly limited understanding of Italian, we fail to understand what the ship has to do with the product being advertised - a table cream - but who are we to question the artistic integrity of the turn of the century Italians. Printed by the famed Baroni printing house in 1918, the poster is in very good condition and mounted on linen. Purchased in Milan.

Vintage poster in typical French Art Deco style - coloration, positioning and tone are very reminiscent of Herge's Tintin works. A poster hanger is literally keeping everyone's open-mouthed attention as he tries to hang up his 'apartment for rent' sign. Poster measures 30.5 inches x 23 inches, is professionally mounted on linen, and is in excellent condition.

This great big, honking French vintage poster is, I think, from just after World War One (I'm using the graphic style, the typographic style, the age of the paper and the quality of the paper as clues), and it is advertising American army surplus as a great value for French back-to-school. I think the concept is hysterical - imagine all these little French kids going to school with army surplus backpacks.... the visual makes me giggle because I think of French kids as way too prim and proper to be carrying that kind of schoolbag. Meanwhile the drill sargeant in the top left corner is literally ordering you to pick up your supplies THIS MINUTE!!

Sagot, Edmond 16 x 20
In 1881 Edmond Sagot opened a shop in Paris dealing in rare and contemporary prints. He rapidly became the most influential fine print dealer of his day. He was also the first art dealer to add illustrated posters to his inventory and his interest in them helped to increase their already growing popularity. In order to advertise his gallery and to promote the artists he published, Sagot commissioned posters during the 1890's from well known masters thus concurrently creating and expanding the market (brilliant marketing, that!) This is one of a pair of posters we recently purchased in Paris, printed by Sagot's atelier (with the notation on the far right side of both tout droit reserve' - all rights reserved, and designed by the artist PB,(initials in top left hand corner of the piece), P. Barroni ... I saw this in a gallery in Paris and fell in love with the man in the image: an escrimeur, a fencer, you can almost see the world-weariness in his eyes, and in the droop of his moustache... I love the hair, the fact that you can't really see below the beginning of his shoulders... While not traditionally handsome, there is something quite compelling about this man...

Colin, Paul
15 x 23
According to Wikipedia, Paul Colin (27 June 1892 in Nancy, France - 18 June 1985 in Nogent-sur-Marne) was one of FranceÕs greatest poster artists. Made famous in 1925 by his poster for the Revue NÂgre, which helped to launch the career of JosŽphine Baker (who became his mistress), he worked for over forty years in the theatre, creating not only posters but also numerous sets and costumes. Very Art dŽco at the outset, his style quickly became highly personal and impossible to categorize: the synthetic accuracy of his portraits, the evocative force of his posters for grand causes so marked him as a master of visual communication that his work today remains relevant and fresh. A student of EugÂne Vallin and of Victor ProuvŽ, he is considered a master of the modern school of poster art. He is the author of over 1400 posters and many theatrical set and costume designs.' While this short description does much to highlight some of Colin's style, it doesn't quite do him justice - he epitomized the very best of Deco design: there was nothing superfluous in his posters, nothing extra, and yet every detail was present. That kind of craftsmanship is highly evident in this aviation poster as well. 'Three years after his excellent design for the 1946 event, Colin conceived another brilliant work for the 18th Parisian International Air Show. Once again emphasizing the worldwide nature of the fly-in, he places a jet repeatedly circling the golden globe through a break in the clouds. Another fine example of uncluttered brevity.
