c. 1720-1570 B.C.
A steatite scarab with various symmetrically placed hieroglyphs carved on the underside to allow the scarab to function as a stamp seal. The hieroglyphs chosen were selected for their protective meaning such as nefer-sign, oudjat-sign, shen-sign and the crown of Lower Egypt therefore giving the scarab seal an amuletic quality. On the top, under the two "angle" sign you can read the beginning of the a-n-r formula, which is most probably connection with the worship of the god Re. This piece is very representative of the Canaanite production during the Hyksos Period and is in very good condition.

The Hyksos Period in Egypt occurred during the Second Intermediate Period and is a time during which a culture from the Levant occupied and ruled much of northern Egypt. The term Hyksos is the name given to these peoples by the Egyptians. Accordingly, it literally translates to “Rulers of Foreign Landsâ€. During this period trade with the Aegean, the Levant and the kingdom of Kush was extensive encouraging the transmission of goods as well as ideas. « Less

The lamp, in the form of a small clay bowl in which oil was burned, was the most common form of domestic lighting from very early times. As olive oil was plentiful in Palestine, this was the fuel normally used in lamps. “As thou shalt command the children of Yisra’el, that they bring pure olive oil beaten for the light, to cause the lamp to burn always†(Exodus 27:20); the wick was usually made of flax.
According to the Mishna, a much greater variety of oils was used for lighting during the Roman period, included oils extracted from sesame seeds, nuts, horseradish and vegetable resins: naptha (an inflammable oil, obtained by dry distillation of coal, shale, etc.) is also mentioned « Less

c. 57-45 B.C.
Cast from lead for use in a sling, the diamond shaped bullet is bi-conical on one side and flat on the other marked with the roman numerals LXIII marking it as ammunition for a member of the thirteenth legion. Originally founded by Julius Caesar in 57 B.C. this legion was in use until it was disbanded in 45 B.C.. During this time they took part in such conflicts as the Gaelic Wars as well as fighting on the side of Caesar during his battle with Pompey and the Senate. It was then reconstituted by Augustus in 41 B.C. as the Legio XIII Gemina (or the 13th Twin Legion) and was in use until the fifth century A.D.

The silver eagle was the ensign of the Roman Legion and the symbol of its power. The legatus was the officer in charge, and he would assign an aquilifer who was the soldier that would carry the aquila (eagle) into battle. If the eagle was captured the legion would disband. It is interesting that Julius Caesar personally sanctified the eagle when the legion was brought forth. On one of the legion standards the powerful talons of the eagle are gripping golden thunderbolts, as the eagle stands ready for flight against all enemies of Rome. At the very top of the standard above the eagle is a gold bar with the inscription SPQR (Senatus Populus Romanus) honoring the Senate and the People. The ancient Roman eagle is important in the study of Biblical archaeology. As with the ancient Hebrews the eagle symbolizes divinity, the bird that comes from above. « Less

Late Period, c. 600-300 B.C.
The deity is depicted seated frontally on an integral plinth with a hand resting on each knee, his tail wrapped around to the right side. As a guardian deity Bes is one of the few Egyptian gods to be regularly depicted in a frontal position. The facial features are finely carved and depict the god with a striated mane surrounding a small mouth. His cheeks are full and the nose is small yet bulbous. The eyes are partially closed above which sit large eyebrows that would have originally been inlaid. Small ears protrude from either side of the head and he wears a modius. This piece is in excellent condition with the vein of the stone adding to its aesthetic appeal.

**************
Bes was an Egyptian deity of protection and the iconography originally referred to several different protective deities in the Egyptian pantheon, later amalgamated into a single figure. In addition to warding off evil spirits he was also closely associated with the protection of women and children and came to be associated with protection during childbirth. « Less

***************
Bacchus (Greek Dionysos) was the god of wine. Consequently he was seen as the personification of the life force of the vine and vegetation and the earth's fertility. He was a volatile god whose rites were celebrated in an ecstatic and orgiastic fashion. His female devotees were the Maenads (Bacchantes) and their drunken and lascivious male counterparts were the Satyrs (Fauns). Drunken old Silenos was also a member of his retinue. Nowhere in ancient literature is the passion and fury of Dionysos better articulated than in Euripides tragedy, "The Bacchantes," (ca. 406 BC). Where Dionysos and the women of Thebes exact a terrible revenge on young prince Pentheus for his failure to pay homage to the god. « Less
