19th century immitation of one of the Meissen figurines of the seasons, made by Capodimonte in Germany. Measures: 8 3/8''high. Base is 3'' in diamter. Beautiful figurine of a woman, representing summer. She is dressed to represent the Pagan symbolism of Summer, a large bundle of wheat under one arm, ears of corn forming a crown around her head. She stands on a round base with moulded and gilded trim. Very fine detail of feet, hands, hair and face and wonderful modelling of the figure and robes. Marks:Blue underglaze N under a crown. Condition: general condition is very good. There is a kiln crack where the bundle of wheat joins her body. This is original to the piece and a purist would not change it. After a careful search, I found that she has lost the inside thumb of her left hand - quite hidden by the pose. I could find no other damage. Magnificent pair of old French soft paste figurines measure approx 10'' and 10 1/4'' respectively. Two cherub - faced young girls sit atop a small pillar. One represents INDUSTRY and the other IDLENESS. Strangely, the words are written in English, but the pieces were confirmed to be French by 2 experts. Each figurine is beautifully modelled. Around her head she has a garland of wild flowers. Loose fitting robes, fall of the shoulder of each young girl. The boddice is bordered by a turquoise ribbon or posy of flowers and the sleeves are similairly adorned with a turquoise ribbon. This matches the garland of flowers above the small base of each piece and the wreath in the hair of each girl. The cloth that Industry is working and the book that Idleness reads are left plain white, as is most of the rest of the figures. Details of hair and delicte flowers are very fine. THe pieces are in good condition. Since they are made of soft paste, some dirt has seeped into the clay, particularly around Idleness''s knee. None of this is offensive, but adds to the charm of these beautiful people. There is quite a lot of crazing, clearly shown in the photos and some of the flowers on the base of Idleness seem to have been reglued. However, besides some very minor chips, everything else is in very good shape. The base of each piece is marked with her name:Idleness and Industry. Unusual Amphora figure of a nude with seahorses and holding a basket shaped as strange birds and pelicans. Made in Chechoslovakia 1918-1939. Measures 8 1/2inches high. A slim young lady with long, flowing hair stands on a round base, modelled with typical Amphora impressed and inset beads. Around the base are 3 strange seahorses, wonderfully modelled in exotic forms and very graceful. The girl holds a basket on one shoulder. It is made in the form of a ring of pelicans. Very exciting forms of these animals echo the folds of the seahorses and contrast with the smooth skin of the girl. Underneath is a blue underglaze oval with Made in Czechoslovakia around the word Amphora, the mark used 1918-1939. Impressed numbers 20192 and 26. Condition is excellent. No chips/cracks/scratches/restorations of any sort. Status: For Sale Reference#: 2138 Condition: See Description Year: See Description Title: AMPHORA FIGURINE NUDE SEAHORSES PELICANS « Less
