Jean-François Raffaëlli (1850 –1924) was a French Realist print maker,painter and sculptor, who exhibited with the impressionist. He was also active as an actor and writer.He was born in Paris and showed an interest in music and theater before becoming a painter in 1870. One of his landscape paintings was accepted for exhibition at the Salon in that same year. In October 1871 he began three months of study under Jean Leon Gerome in Paris. Jacob van Ruisdael -The Great Beech - Etching Stunning original 17th century etching by Dutch master painter Jacob van Ruisdael, The Great Beech (aka Two Farmers with Their Dog), signed in the plate, impression on Japon paper, tipped onto a support sheet. The image size is 7.25 inches x 10.5 inches. Small margins and in very good condition, with only slight adhesive rippling to the corners. Identical editions can be found in the permanent collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Jacob van Ruisdael (1628-1682) is considered one of the great Dutch masters of landscape painting. Inspired by his surroundings and from the tales of travelers he met, he created paintings that evoke emotion and contemplation. Van Ruisdael also used his imagination to create dramatic scenes and some of the most astonishing landscape art works ever produced. Published in a rare and limited edition of color mezzotint engraving in London 1923. This treasure measures 12.50 inches by 19.50 approximately and is in good condition. Little discoloration on verso with a light spot of foxing, not visible on the front side of the art work. Pencil signed by the engraver.Thomas Gainsborough (christened 14 May 1727 — 2 August 1788) was one of the most famous portrait and landscape painters’ etcher and draughtsman of 18th century Britain.Thomas Gainsborough was born in Sudbury, Suffolk, England. His father was a weaver involved with the wool trade. At the age of thirteen he impressed his father with his penciling skills so that he let him go to London to study art in 1740.In London he first trained under engraver Hubert Gravelot but eventually became associated with William Hogarth and his school. Year later he would work in executing a small numbers of original etched work of landscape studies.Clifford R. James was among a handful of mezzotint engravers of the earlier 20th Century mezzotint engravers and was considered among one of the best of the period.   « Less
