These are the poetic words of the 15th century French poet François Villon, an alluring character who lived during the waning years of the middle ages. His vagabond life style amongst the outcasts of Paris matched his novel poetic style, for he wrote both satirically and seriously about the earthiness and ribaldry of his time, mingling his poetic words with the restless individuality of the coming renaissance. Jailed often and once even condemned to death, only to be pardoned at the last minute, the character of Villon is a remarkable reflection of Europe during this fascinating period in history. In Endre Szasz's portrayal of François Villon we see the intriguing figure of Villon emerge through the character's riveting eyes, their intensity coupled with a twinkling glint that suggests his unconventional nature. A dramatic hat sits high atop Villon's head, its bright red detailed adornment perhaps echoing the beautiful complexities of Villon’s own mind as well as those of the period in which he lived. A cape with swirling colors wraps around the poet's slender shoulders giving a feeling of poetic movement to this stunning painting, and seemingly embracing Villon within the movements of the cosmos. The music of the universe was given voice through the words of this most gifted and imaginative poet. Here the image of Villon is given expression through the talents of Endre Szasz, this most gifted and imaginative painter. - (ES.034)Endre Szasz - Francois Villon - ES.034Dimensions: 23.5" (59.7cm) high x 19" (48.3cm) wide Collection: Contemporary Art

In “My Grannyâ€, a darkened background illuminates the characteristic face of a wise, old matriarch. Delicate wisps of grey-white hair spiral down her cheek to meet the ornate gold decoration on the moss colored cape that covers her venerable form. The woman reveals to us strong and spirited qualities in her sage-like amber eyes, strong cheekbones and prominent chin. Her hooded head hearkens us back to medieval visual iconography, whereby the image of a covered head signified one's invincibility over death. - (ES.036)Endre Szasz - My Granny - ES.036

In the painting “Red Hat Girlâ€, we observe a lovely young woman dressed in passionate red, a garnet-colored hat framing her delicately rendered face. The girl's expression is rather pensive--perhaps she is thinking of her distant love, while the melodic words of an old folk song run through her mind, hinting that she and her lover may be united once again. - (ES.037)Endre Szasz - Red Hat Girl - ES.037Dimensions: 12" (30.5cm) high x 12" (30.5cm) wide Collection: Contemporary Art Medium: Oil On Wood « Less

In the painting “Villon’s Lover†we observe the radiant image of a medieval maiden, lover to the 15th century French poet François Villon. Villon was an alluring character whose vagabond lifestyle amongst the outcasts of Paris during the waning years of the middle ages matched his novel poetic style. He wrote both satirically and seriously about the earthiness and ribaldry of his time, mingling his poetic words with the restless individuality of the coming Renaissance. This striking maiden won the passionate love of Villon and surely many of his more amorous writings were inspired by her beauty. Here we see her gentle face softly illuminated, while waves of light and shadow surround her delicate form, echoing the feelings for Villon that quiver within her. - (ES.038)Endre Szasz - Villon's Lover - ES.038Dimensions: 22.5" (57.2cm) high x 14.5" (36.8cm) wide Collection: Contemporary Art Medium: Enamel On Porcelain « Less

In the painting “Pope†we observe the figure of an old pope, his wizened face and somber eyes testifying to the inevitable tolls of time. His aged image appears trapped within the confines of the swirling light and shadow that envelops his physical being as well as his soul. A sense of humble resignation passes over him, for both the real and imagined battles of the faith may now be somehow too overwhelming to combat. We feel a sense of compassion for this vintage figure, as he reveals to us a weariness and vulnerability that can touch us one and all, saint and sinner alike. - (ES.039)Endre Szasz - Pope - ES.039Dimensions: 22.5" (57.2cm) high x 14.5" (36.8cm) wide Collection: Contemporary Art Medium: Enamel On Porcelain

With concentration bordering on the extreme, an aged man contemplates the vision of an enshrined bullet in Endre Szasz's painting “Bulletâ€. For this desperate man the bullet is a symbolic weapon used to fight his enemy, the wicked monsters that ravage his soul. The attribute of heroes, saints and demigods, a weapon represents a powerful force--its strength all-pervasive in the struggle against evil. Perhaps this man will find his weapon, the unique armor he needs to revive the hero from within and salvage hisdistressedanddamagedsoul.-(ES.041)Endre Szasz - Bullet - ES.041Dimensions: 15" (38.1cm) high x 23" (58.4cm)wide Collection:Contemporary Art Style: Endre Szasz Medium: Enamel On Porcelain « Less

In Endre Szasz's painting “United Nations†we observe the surrealistic image of four figures, their heads and bodies overlaying and interacting upon each other in More »
In Endre Szasz's painting “United Nations†we observe the surrealistic image of four figures, their heads and bodies overlaying and interacting upon each other in a most imaginative fashion. Potent symbolism in the form of highly accentuated hands adds an element of the spiritual to this painting. One man holds his hand to his breast in the attitude of a sage, while another raises his hand in a fashion that symbolizes voice and song. Yet another holds a light in his hand, its brilliant luminosity representing the cosmic force, the creative energy that surges through us all. United in their powers of the spirit, these figures emanate an assurance that mankind is capable of a connected vision--he can see all things in one. - (ES.043Endre Szasz - United Nations - ES.043Dimensions: 14" (35.6cm) high x 20.5" (52.1cm) wide Collection: Contemporary Art Medium: Pen & Ink On Paper « Less

In the painting “Communicative Power†we are witness to the spirited forces that exist when two individuals share their souls. A pair of figures is face to face, their eyes interlocked in a voiceless communication that transcends the confines of language. Between them stands a flower, a symbol of the center, and hence the image of the soul. While one of the figures reaches out to touch the other, we too reach out to embrace the sentiment that emanates from this most sensitive painting. - (ES.044)Endre Szasz - Communicative Power - ES.044Dimensions: 14" (35.6cm) high x 20.5" (52.1cm) wide Collection: Contemporary Art Medium: Pen & Ink On Paper « Less
