American musical theater has a great and varied history. According to the website musicals101 At the start of the 20th Century, America was in the full glory of its cultural adolescence, bursting with energy and optimism. London was still the theatrical capital of the world, but New York was gaining fast in clout, sophistication and size. As of 1900, there were thirty-three legitimate Broadway theatres, and many more would be built within the next decade to meet growing audience demand. New York's exploding population was also enjoying increased mobility. In 1904, the city opened its first underground commuter railroad lines. Thanks to these 'subways,' tens of thousands living far from the theatre district could catch a Broadway show and still sleep in their own beds. Add in the ever-increasing numbers of tourists who came into the city by rail and steamship, and it was easy to see why Broadway could now support more productions and longer runs than ever before.' We believe this magnificent and awe inspiring poster typifies the best of musical history and musical posters. Helena Dyas Lasky - an auburn haired, small-waisted beauty must have had a show of her own or starred in someone else's production - no information is available on her. The artist C. Zander (Berlin) is also an unknown, although the Star Printing Office is a known American printing house which was popular at the turn of the century. The poster is in very good condition and measures roughly 31 x 81 inches, mounted on linen.

This poster is from the 1920''s Charlie Chaplin first burst onto the movie scene - it is from his first movie ever!! Iconographic and legendary, Charlie Chaplin gave more to film than almost any other actor before or since. His ''everyman'' personna was simple to understand, the situations he found himself in were mundane, but his solutions were always extraordinary, enchanting and the thing which kept audiences around the world coming back for more. This poster, mounted on linen, for the French version of a movie called by different names in different countries (see listing below), gives some idea of what made Mr. Chaplin so special to so many people. The colors are extravagant, the poses are typical and the designs are somewhat reminiscent of the Tintin designer Herge. According to Wikipedia, ''Sir Charles Spencer Chaplin, KBE (16 April 1889 25 December 1977) was an English comedic actor and film director. Chaplin became one of the most famous actors as well as a notable filmmaker, composer and musician in the early to mid Classical Hollywood era of American cinema. Chaplin acted in, directed, scripted, produced and eventually scored his own films as one of the most creative and influential personalities of the silent-film era. His working life in entertainment spanned over 65 years, from the Victorian stage and the Music Hall in the United Kingdom as a child performer almost until his death at the age of 88. His high-profile public and private life encompassed both adulation and controversy. With Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks and D. W. Griffith, Chaplin co-founded United Artists in 1919. In a review of the book Chaplin: A Life (2008), Martin Sieff writes: ''Chaplin was not just ''big'', he was gigantic. In 1915, he burst onto a war-torn world bringing it the gift of comedy, laughter and relief while it was tearing itself apart through World War I. Over the next 25 years, through the Great Depression and the rise of Hitler, he stayed on the job. He was bigger than anybody. It is doubtful any individual has ever given more entertainment pleasure and relief to so many human beings when they needed it the most.'' USA .... Charlie''s Day Out USA .... Otherwise, the poster is in very good condition (B) - intact and colorful. I have not been able to find any other example of this poster anywhere, in any condition. One of the elements of Art Deco design which differentiates it from many/any other period, is it''s bold use of color and typography: few other periods manage to integrate the use of such vibrant and dynamic blocks of color and design and to integrate them into a cohesive message which actually and effectively sells a product. This small gem for the French tobacco industry has all the hallmarks of excellence: it uses type to frame itself, in various colors, fonts and type sizes; it integrates the shadow of a man and woman to indicate that the product is able to be used by both sexes, and it has a dark background (as many Art Deco posters did) in order to grab and hold the viewers attention. This piece, though small, arguably has many of the design elements which can be found in much larger poster by the well known artists of the period like Cappiello, Vincent, Dion, and others. Poster measures 10 x 12.5 inches, is linen backed and in very good condition. (This same piece is being sold on line for almost double the price, in an unlined state...) McKnight Kauffer, Ted
30 x 40
Ted McKnight Kauffer (1890 -1954) Born in Montana, USA. He studied in San Francisco and Paris. Kauffer came to London in 1914 and in 1915 he was commissioned by Frank Pick at London Transport. From this time he was an extremely influential designer of posters, theatre costume, exhibition designs, murals, book illustrations, carpets and textiles. He and his wife Marion Dorn, also an accomplished designer, made a dynamic and glamorous couple. Kauffer returned to America in 1940. Many retrospective exhibitions of his work have been held, including those at the Museum of Modern Art, New York and at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London. Kauffer's connections to the artistic avant-garde in France and Britain placed him at the forefront of developments in the visual language of advertsing during the 1930s and 40's. He ranks as one of the most significant designers of the 20c - in Britain or anywhere in the world.' Kauffer's work was graphic in the sense that - at least to me - there were few extraneous flourishes - there was a message, it was clear, and it was delivered cleanly, in elegant style. This poster, done in 1948 as one of a series he did for American Airlines, is a perfect example of the work for which he is rightly regarded as a pioneer and an expert. Featuring the classic skyline of Washington, it is a great poster for an office, living room or any room where a significant poster would add to the decor.

Designed by Ottoman Anton (1895-1976), this lovely aquamarine poster features the South American lines of the Holland America Line. Anton was a painter and graphic artist who worked in Hamburg, Cologne and Cairo. He designed a large number of lithographic ship portraits for many of the larger German shipping companies, and produced a number of lasting images for the Holland American Lines. Many of his works form the backbone of maritime museum collections, as well as the foundation for a variety of private collections, however, I have not been able to find this particular poster, in any museum or private collection. Past auction results for Anton posters for Hamburg Amerika have ranged from $US2500-$2900+. The poster measures 22.5 x 32 inches an is in very good condition: it shows some slight creasing on the far left side (very minor) and a small shadow on the top (also minor). The Holland America Line was founded in 1873 as the Dutch-America Steamship Company (Dutch: Nederlandsch-Amerikaansche Stoomvaart Maatschappij), a shipping and passenger line. Because it was headquartered in Rotterdam and provided service to the Americas, it became known as Holland America Line (HAL). The first ships sailed between Rotterdam and New York in 1872. Until scheduled transatlantic passenger transport ended New York (Hoboken) remained the main American terminal. Other services were started later that century to South America and Baltimore. A pure cargo service to New York was added in 1899. In the early years of the 20th century other North American ports were added to the service. In the first 25 years of its existence the line carried 400,000 people from the old to the new world. Though transportation and shipping were the primary sources of revenue, in 1895 the company offered its first vacation cruise. Its second leisure cruise, from New York to the Holy Land, was first offered in 1910.

Cappiello, Leonetto
60,5 x 44
Only Cappiello could use a larger than life elephant as the mascot for a rolling paper company - Le Nil has achieved brand awareness that has long outlived the brand itself, all thanks to Cappiello's brilliant use of marketing, coloring and the sheer size of this baby - measuring a whopping 60.5 x 44.5 inches,it is almost as huge as an elephant itself. ÊCappiello is considered to be one of the greatest posterists of his age. Cappiello's approach was always image association - the idea that you don't really remember the image of the product itself, but the image of something is associated with the product ... Cappiello was the first who thoroughly understood this, and he applied it with considerable diligence in about a thousand posters.'(Rennert)

From a magnificent book published in the early 1920''s of Hohlwein''s works. The introduction for the book reads as follows: Born in Munich, Germany in July, 1871, he started his professional career as an architect, but in 1895 was induced by his love of color and the lure to produce colorful posters, to desert his profession and to begin his new career asa poster designer. Immediately he established for himself an enviable reputation and soon was recognized as the leader in the field. He has retained this distinction ever since and today is cnsidered not only the foremost poster designer in Germany, but one of the best inthe world. During the long period of activity in which he produced many hundred posters, he has hardly ever failed to produce a thing of beauty and charm. His compositions are always striking and original, his color harmonies unusual and superb and his technique at once recognizable and inimitable. Undoubtedly, many of his productions bear the distinctive mark of an architect, others again are endowed with the qualities of mural decorator, while others denote the frequency with which he has been influenced by the Japanese print. Throughout his entire career as poster artist, he has successfully maintained a high standard of excellence in his work, whether it be a dignified poster to exploit a war loan, or a humorous sketch to advertise a shoe polish. His versatility seems unbounded. One needs only glance though the present collection of his works to realize and appreciate the remarkable and charming qualtiies of the modern decorative poster designer, Ludwig Hohlwein.'' This volume was owned by the General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen of New York who for some unknown reason stamped each page of the book with their seal. I have attempted to photograph each plate well and to show where the seal shows on the plate - if at all. The plates are all in pristine condition, with no foxing or tearing. The colors of the book are slightly more punchy than the Hohlwein prints we have here in the gallery - I assume that the reproduction skills of the printer are the reason for that. The colors are as they appear in the photos. Please e-mail a request for any additional photos. (On a personal note - I have fallen in love with the work of Hohlwein: although I consider myself fairly well versed in art history, I had never heard of Hohlwein before I opened my gallery. His work brings me great pleasure - it is precise, humorous and colorful. I think these prints will look magnificent framed.) This particular print measures 9 x 7inches, and framed it measures approx. 12 x 14 inches. PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL OF OUR PRINTS, POCHOIRS AND POSTERS ARE ORIGINAL, NON REPRODUCTION WORKS. Please check out our other items for sale on this site - we add new items almost every day. E-mail with questions or requests for additional photos.
