Victorian, dated 1846 1846 Silkwork Commemorative Sampler by Charlotte Cull. The sampler depicts a representation of the Rufus Stone, which marks the spot where King William II was fatally wounded by an arrow, during a hunting trip in the New Forest in 1100AD. Framed in a modern, gilt over wood, frame behind green mount card and glass. Stitched over card with chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout. Rolling waves border. Colours gold, light brown, green and black. Verses read ''Mine..> steed in the> new forest hants> these are the words> on King Rufus stone''. Victorian, dated 1838 1838 Silkwork Sampler by Mary Higham. Framed in an old, burr maple frame with gilt slip and rippled, old glass. Loose mounted onto chipboard with wooden backing. The sampler is worked in silk on canvas ground, in cross stitch throughout. Meandering strawberry border. Colours dark green, cream, green, dark brown, black and light brown. Verse reads ''All you my friends who now expect to see> A piece of marking thus perform''d by me> Cast but a smile on this my mean endeavour> Ill strive to mend and be obedient ever.''. Signed and dated ''Mary Higham''s work in her 10 th year 1838''. A good set of motifs, including a church, insects, diamonds, birds, a fruit tree, pitcher, fruit basket, crown, house, gentleman, dog, potted flowering plants and flowers. Good. No holes. A number of stains. Minor stitch loss to the verse. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. Slight colour run around the dark green threads. Colours light brown, cream, blue, red, green, pale green, copper, gold, dark brown and olive green.
