The Cupisnique culture is closely related to, and some scholars believe same culture - different site, as the more famous Chavin culture. Characteristic heavy potted vessel with thick stirrup and a base depicting a spiny spondylus shell that was an important element of the Cupisnique culture for trade and decoration. 7-1/2"H, intact/generally excellent, save a bit of surface roughness.

I love seeing new forms of ancient pottery! The Chimu were wonderful potters, but most of their vessels tend to look very similar. This one is quite unique! Chimu, north-coastal Peru, ca. 900 to 1100 AD. Showing clear elements of the earlier Sican culture, blackware stirrup with conical base in the form of a large sea shell, two smaller shells attached at the top from which the stirrup spout has been attached. Just under 7"H, intact and choice!
