This however a fabulous painting of the artist's love; the inscription as so often anonymous to x________X the anchor seems out of whack until one realizes it was used as a cupid's arrow, to point in the direction of the touching declaration... thereby the vermillion cheeks covered by the voile, and the dilated pupils... it is love... signed with message, very rare fabulous oil by Roseland; not in the usual muggy colours, but vibrant colours, very much alive... it does not come better than this...   « Less

A beautifully limned miniature portrait painting, on natural organic material, by Raphaelle Peale. The sitter is a nice looking gentleman wearing a black coat, white stock and shirt. Housed in a metal case with a lock of hair in the glazed aperture on the reverse. Condition of the painting is excellent, with no issues. The case is in good condition with some dents on the reverse. The sight size is 2" by 1 5/8", and the framed size is 2 3/8" by 2". NOTE: Raphaelle Peale (1774 - 1825) was a member of the Peale family, which encompassed 17 artists, including Rembrandt, Anna Claypool, Charles Wilson, James, Rubens, etc. He was born in Annapolis, MD, and was the oldest son of Charles Wilson Peale, and was considered an extremely fine miniaturist and painter.   « Less
