In 1881 Edmond Sagot opened a shop in Paris dealing in rare and contemporary prints. He rapidly became the most influential fine print dealer of his day. He was also the first art dealer to add illustrated posters to his inventory and his interest in them helped to increase their already growing popularity. In order to advertise his gallery and to promote the artists he published, Sagot commissioned posters during the 1890''s from well known masters thus concurrently creating and expanding the market (brilliant marketing, that!) This is one of a pair of posters we recently purchased in Paris, printed by Sagot''s atelier (with the notation on the far right side of both ''tout droit reserve'' - all rights reserved, and designed by the artist PB,(initials in top left hand corner of the piece), P. Barroni ... I saw this in a gallery in Paris and fell in love with the man in the image: an escrimeur, a fencer, you can almost see the world-weariness in his eyes, and in the droop of his moustache... I love the hair, the fact that you can''t really see below the beginning of his shoulders... While not traditionally handsome, there is something quite compelling about this man.. Poster measures 16 x 20 inches, is linen backed in very good A- condition, and linen backed. Please note that all of our posters, prints, pochoirs and ephemera are vintage, non-reproduction works of art. Please check often as we add new items all the time. Thanks for your interest! We are happy to ship worldwide -please note that worldwide shipping cost is for surface mail -which could take between 2-4 months. If you would like faster delivery we will happily check out fedex and ups rates and let you know what they are. These costs will be in addition to shipping charges shown below. Usually when I list posters I like to be able to mention something about the artist, the poster itself - where it comes from, etc. I always like to find that a story helps make the poster more of a living thing. However, in this case I can find no information on the poster, the tabacco company or the image. So, I am reduced to figuring it out from my own experience and research. It appears to date from the Deco period, and I would imagine that the image used would have been inspired by the worldwide icon of a smoking feather headress wearing person of Native descent (I apologize the the seeming political incorrectness, but some posters are a product of their times). Poster measures 23 x 32 inches and is in A- condition (there appears to have been a small hole which was placed - it does not affect the image). Colors are vibrant and striking, as is the image. Poster has been professionally linen lined. Often called the Father of the French Pin-up, Brenot was born in Montparnasse (Paris) in 1913. He was the artist for the Folies Berger, and The Lido and was fastinated with transforming a sexually psychological state into a visual one. He was a stylist for such famous brands as Dior, Balmain, Nina Ricci and Saint Laurent working for years at the height of the industry... His work is reminiscent of Vargas and other pin up experts and reminds us of Gruau and other masters of the period. The colors of this poster pop and we feel it will look wonderful framed. Standing against the background of the Alps, this shapely Swiss miss has everything going for her - a tan, an envious figure and - she''s blond! Linen lined and in excellent condition, the poster was printed in Switzerland, by S.A Lith. Klausferlder. 1959 and is signed Pierre L Brenot. Measures 25 x 40 inches. Ernst Lubbert was a classic German artist of the Art Deco period. (German, 1879-1915) His hard-to-find works most often portray the haute monde, high society folks of German or Austrian background at events which seems to suit them best - dining, dancing, or just entertaining each other. His color palatte is usually restrained, but make sthe most of bold crimsons, reds, and usually black. Reminding us of Ludwig Hohlwien, a contemporary and country-man, Lubberts work makes us wish that Belle Epoque Berlin hadnt taken place almost 100 years ago. This poster for Cardinal, produced in 1911, is exceptionally beautiful, and like all of Lubbert''s pieces, a must for collectors of Jugenstil, Art Deco and classic designs. Condition B (professional restoration evident in poster - please see close up photos for details). Paper, linen backing, poster measures 27.5 x 36.5 inches. Please note that all of our posters are vintage, non- reproduction works of art. Please see our other posters, prints and ephemera on this site. Thank you! According to Wikipedia, (yes, yes, my source for EVERYTHING) Coruba is a New Zealand brand of rum. Coruba is distilled and imported from Jamaica, but is not distributed commercially in Jamaica. There are two types of Coruba rum. The ''Original'' which is a dark rum, and a more recent ''Gold'' style rum. Coruba Jamaica Rum is a 100% Jamaican Rum made to the older ''planters rum'' style. Coruba has both pot and column still rums all aged in small oak barrels for at least two years. Over thirty rum ''marks'' are used to create the Coruba blend and a Solera system is followed to ensure blending consistency over time. Coruba Jamaica Rum was first imported into New Zealand in 1967. Coruba became the leading rum in New Zealand in the early 1970''s and has held this position ever since. Coruba is the second largest selling spirit brand in New Zealand and has held this position since the late 1980''s. Coruba Jamaica Rum is one of the icon spirit brands of New Zealand.'' Why, you might ask, is this ad in German, then? Good question, and I, unfortunately, have no answer. This poster is one of a series which were produced in the 50''s for Coruba, each featuring a smiling Jamaican native in a big hat... In very good condition, the poster measures 36 x 49 inches, is linen backed, with very vibrant colors and is in A- condition. Printed BY : Wassermann A.G., Basel I think this piece would look great in a kitchen, dining room (either residential or commercial), bar, restaurant... the possibilities are endless! Description: For me, the best posters of the Art Deco period (and although I can''t date this poster with precision I would put it in the 1920''s/1930''s) are the ones which use color well, which execute the message clearly and which place the product front and center - just like this one. There is also something about it which reminds me of those cartoon crows which populated the Tom and Jerry shorts in the 60''s - you know the ones: the cigar-chomping crows who would wise-crack with each other while jostling for the best position on the telephone wires? I love the shadowing in the background - humorous and slightly malevolent all at the same time. I think this piece would look great in a kitchen, dining room (either residential or commercial), bar, restaurant... the possibilities are endless! It is linen backed and in very good condition. Greco, S.
21 x 41
According to the wikipedia entry for TWA (which makes for very interesting reading), the airline flew into both Shannon and Dublin airports in Ireland during the heyday period of international flying. This poster - dating from the 1950s and signed by S. Greco (an artist for whom we can find no information), shows the idyllic Irish country side and some of its bucolic charms. The airline was one of the first to use the hub system and incorpoated many revolutionary systems in its fleet, but was ultimately acquired by American Airlines at the tail end of 2001.
