Wilson Shannon portrait. The 14th, and 16th Governor of Ohio. The first Native Governor of Ohio. Terms in office: 1838-40, and 1842-44. Appointed by President Tyler in 1844 to be the Minister to Mexico. Appointed to be the 2nd Territorial Governor of Kansas by President Pierce in 1855. He served in that position until 1856. D.H. Williams is the artist. Commissioned in 1874 to paint the portrait, just 3 years before Wilson Shannon passed away. There is minor damage to the canvas, although it was professionally repaired years ago. Despite it being difficult to tell, it is none the less there. In the lighted area's right boundary (to the right of his face), between his nose, and his mouth there was a tear. The painting dimensions are: 33 1/2 inches in length, and, 28 inches in width. A two-State Governor, this piece of American history is a most unique, and impressive piece.   « Less

Fannie Burr (1858-1931) was born into Monroe, CT's most prominent family. Her father was a very successful farmer. She attended and graduated from Mt Holyoke College and the Yale School of Fine Arts, and studied at the Art Students League in NYC. These accomplishments were very rare for a young woman in those days. Listed in Who Was Who in American Art by Peter Falk. Exhibition at the New Britain Museum of American Art New Britain CT. Catalogue of work produced by The Connecticut Gallery Inc. This painting was acquired directly from an heir to the estate. Frame measures 17.5 x 19.5; canvas measures 14 x 16. Shipping extra. Antique hand painted miniature portrait of Marie Antoinette signed Lebrun. Set in a brulle turtle shell frame. The frame does have some minor lifting and splitting but all pieces are intact. The painting is set behind convex glass with a ornate brass oval rim. Fram has a green floral fabric backing with a blue /white Harke label attached. A ring is on the back for hanging, there is a nail hole on the top where it may have originally been. I think this is painted on ivory but am just not sure. Frame measures 4 1/2" x 5 1/4" while portrait measures 2" x 2 1/2". Measures are approx. I don't know the age of this painting but I do know It is real and not a transfer.   « Less
