Georgian Chippendale Carved Mahogany Wingback Arm Chair, c. 1760-80

This is a stunning and rare piece, with a unique and quite interesting design. The crest is flat, squaring off with small lobed wings that culminate where your head would rest, and flow back into the frame almost immediately. These flank a broad and very comfortable upholstered back, from which both open upholstered arms flare slightly outward before joining the sloped arm supports. Each arm support is intricately carved with gothic fretwork designs out of a single solid block of mahogany - none of the carvings on this chair are applied, all of them being carved of the solid. These flow into a square seat, deeply upholstered and stuffed over the rail. The seat rests over two square front legs, each with gothic fretwork motifs carved long them, stretched with a box stretcher joining using hidden tenon mortise joinery - not dovetails. The rear legs are square, canted and slightly backswept and all four legs are chamfered along the interior corner.
This is one of the most beautiful Georgian chairs we've carried, having fabulous carvings with a deep glowing patina on all exposed surfaces in rich mahogany. It is incredibly solid and heavy, being fully functional nearly three-hundred years after being originally crafted, with generations of strength still in the joints throughout. This is an outstanding find for any serious collector of Georgian antiques, but also a wonderful find for anyone looking to bring this classic design to their home in a striking and wonderful way.

This is a beautiful work of art with incredible swirled mahogany veneers. The crest is decorated with a vase over acanthus leaves, swirls rising from the vase to culminate in a four petal flower, each flanking a round floral motif, the square exposed arms wrapping around the back to terminate in incredibly cast Ram Head brass mounts. The arms flank a broad and quite comfortable upholstered seat, back and arms, each with a "bee" decorated upholstery. Sloped arm supports complete the frame, resting into a straight straight apron with pierced anthemion mounts flanking a round patera. The knees are topped by round patera designs as well, each front leg being square and tapered, the rear legs square and softly backswept, all terminating in original brass casters.
This is a gorgeous chair and an absolute work of art. In quite rare form with all original mounts, each cast with incredible detail, this is a wonderful find for the collector of French Empire. It is sturdy in all joints with a strength throughout capable of enduring several generations with your family.

The crest rail is scooped in the center, curving upwards into pointed ears with small wooden pegs at the center of each. The stiles are carved carefully, tenoned and pinned at the crest ears, flat along the front and curved along the back into the frame, where the stiles square and sweep backwards. These flank a thick pierced splat of very unique vasiform design, tenoned at the top and locking into the shoe at the bottom of the frame. Unique to Southern State chairs, the shoe is a solid piece of the back of the chair frame - in Northern States and much of England, chairs were often crafted with a shoe that sits on top of the back of the chair frame, making this a significant part of the design. The seat frame is trapezoidal, a geometrical upholstered slip seat dropping smoothly into the space, the rim around the frame molded carefully. Each corner is pegged, with these piercing into the inside of the frame and visible from beneath, crafted so flawlessly that no interior blocking has ever been used to secure the frame. Straight molded front legs have a Box-form stretcher locking each together, pinned at the corners with tiny wooden pegs. A deep patina covers every square inch of the solid cherry.
This is a simply incredible Southern Chippendale Chair, an outstanding find for collector and decorator alike. Preserved in original condition in nearly every detail (exception with the finish and upholstery), this fine work of American craftsmanship will be treasured in your home for generations to come.
Measurements:
19" wide at front corners, 35 1/2" high to crest, 18 1/2" deep approximately; 15 1/2" high to seat (petite).

This is a remarkable chair, having a softly serpentine crest over a slightly backswept upholstered back. The stiles are full length of mahogany, stretching from the crest through the feet to create an incredibly strong frame, the legs being square, canted with chamfered interior corners. Both upholstered arms have a soft serpentine, curving outwards before joining the molded mahogany arm supports, flanking an upholstered seat stuffed over the square frame. Mahogany square legs are stretched with a box stretcher, the center bar tenoned into the side stretchers. The old finish is worn and full of character, a deep wonderful patina glowing through the legs and stretcher. We have not removed the upholstery from the frame to examine the secondary woods beneath.
This is a gorgeous chair for anyone with a passion for the Chippendale Period, practical and functional with incredible strength in joints and broad comfortable proportions. These chairs are quite hard to find, and in this simply outstanding condition is particularly special. As a predecessor to the later Federal Period Lolling Chair, you can see the evolution from one period to the next, where eventually the legs would taper and backs gain height. It is a restrained design from the upholstered back chairs of Thomas Chippendale's book with a distinct American taste. This is a much sought after acquisition for serious collectors and 18th Century American enthusiasts. It will be treasured in your family for generations to come.
Measurements:
26" wide x 24 3/4" deep x 43 1/4" high; seat is 15" over ground

They are quite fantastic works of art, each with pierced reticulated ribbon-back (or vertical ribbon-back) carved splat designs. The crest is a single piece of carved mahogany that drops onto both stiles with tenons securing them. The splat pieces also drop into the bottom and top of the chair frame, each being carved of a single piece of mahogany with all swoons and swells of form masterfully executed. The stiles have wonderful sense of motion, each with true individuality when compared against the next - these sidewind in a subtle bending form into the crest.
The leg and stile are a single piece, moving from incredible carved formations into a chamfered canted backswept leg. These are locked together in a mahogany box-stretcher structure, whereby the side and back rails of the stretcher mortise into the actual leg, with the middle crossing stretcher half-dovetailing beneath either side rail to lock perfectly in place. The Marlboro front legs are molded on the front and side, leaving the back chamfered with no design. A serpentine form green upholstered seat of generous Period proportions rests over this entire structure, with replaced blocking keeping the frame incredibly strong.
This is a stunning pair with a simply stunning patina through every portion of the set. They feature only the best in English craftsmanship, with incredible carving and tight clean lines. They make a fine acquisition for any formal setting, with a functional sturdiness and structural integrity that will last for centuries to come with proper care.
Measurements:
21 1/2" wide, 21" deep, 36 1/2" high to crest, 18 1/2" high to upholstered seat.
