This ancient votive seal was discovered with a cache of similar artifacts along the shores of Lake Van.Evoking the dawn of Western culture, these apparently were offerings at the shrine of some powerful god. This unknown deity appears to have been associated with fertility and rebirth. The design that adorns them—of birds, animals, cult idols—probably stood in proxy for more costly sacrifices.Pressed into soft clay or wax, they would have created multiple images to win the favor of the god. Carved with an abstract simplicity but an observant eye toward nature, the stark visual appeal of this piece is timeless. These seals represent dreams, hopes and aspirations for health, success, and happiness that areas old as civilization itself.-(D.0059)Bird Effigy Votive Seal With A Pair Of Intaglios D.0059Origin:Lake Van,Anatolia Circa:4000BCto3000BCDimensions:2(5.1cm)highx.875(2.2cm)wide Collection:Near Eastern Style:Neolithic Medium: Dickite « Less

Shaped like an abstract bird, thisancientvotivesealwasdiscovered with a cache of similar artifacts along the shores of Lake Van. Evoking the dawn of Western culture, these apparently were offerings at the shrine of some powerful nature god. The design that adorns them—of birds, animals, seated idols—probably stood in proxy for more costly sacrifices. Pressed into soft clay or wax, they would have created multiple images to win the favor of the god. It is possible that the bird, a recurring motif, was associated with the idea of the soul. Origin: Egypt
Circa: 1600 BC to 1100 BC
Collection: Egyptian
Style: New Kingdom
Medium: Faience
This delightful amulet depicts a figure of the recumbent lion. In ancient Egypt, the lion was symbolic of strength and was often associated with the king. A typical example of this can be seen when observing the sphinx, shown with a lion body and the head of a king. This symbolized the king and the sun god re at the same time. In the eighteenth dynasty (ca. 1550-1070 B.C.) lions were symbolic of the king's power. Kings, such as Amenhotep II and Amenhotep III, were said to have killed many lions for sport in lion hunts. Amenhotep III had large scarabs inscribed with texts describing his lion hunts. Sometimes the king was depicted with a lion lying besides his throne. This may have been symbolic, or perhaps the king actually had a pet lion. - (PF.4417) « Less
