Walking stick, looks like Silky Oak, with a silver collar on which the initials G.C.L. are punched. Flattened oval profile to the upper stem of the stick, tapering down into an octagonal profile. Antique walking stick, probably late 19th to early 20th century. Sterling silver top, but worn surfaces, no hallmarks, possibly New Zealand made. Silver top is engraved with scrolls and foliage, has some faults such as dings and an area of wear-through. Split in collar join, but all part of use and age. All in good sound sturdy condition. This is a nice quality early 20th century walking stick made in Birmingham by Jonathan Howell and Co one of the finest cane/stick/parasol handle makers of the 19th and early 20th century. Walking stick - more of a cane really, as not strong enough to take full weight. Unusual handle, separate piece of wood, with a carved buckle at the join. Poker-work "stitching" to either side of the top seam. There is split below the handle on the stem, making the stem a little loose - which could be repaired. Brass cap on end. Cane measures 91 cm long, and the stem is 2 cm diameter, tapering down to 1.7 cm diameter. Apart from the split (about 4 cm long), condition is sound - normal scuffing and age wear to handle.   « Less
