A multitude of blue tones like those of an undulating sea captivate our visual imagination in youth. While background waves gently dance across the surface, interrupted only by softly encroaching formations of gold, our attention is nevertheless drawn to the figure in the painting's foreground. Here we observe a young man's distinctive face softly highlighted by a distant light source. His striking visage is framed by long, wispy locks of hair and a stunning hat, whose feathers and pearls radiate like the myriad rays of the sun. One look at his face, however, reveals bourgeois eyes that only address the earthly concerns of materialism, involvements that breed distrust and perhaps even dishonesty. Wild and mysterious patterns and images in the painting surround the man and adorn his clothing. A crouching, horned beast covers the front of the man's hat, representing the greedy and mischievous thoughts that lurk within the mind of this interesting figure. "Offerings to a Different God" expels a tremendous frenetic energy as a surreal collection of characters is portrayed in mid-motion, each proceeding toward their venerable god. Two human-like figures in the center each hold an offering; one resembles a stylized pomegranate while the other offering appears to be a large eye lying on a plate. Ancient, universal symbolism is revealed in these offerings, for the pomegranate is an age-old symbol of fertility, while the eye represents a supreme intelligence and understanding of the spirit. Surrounding these two human-like devotees are a number of fantastic creatures, on land as well as in the air, all intensely focused on their god. Light and shadows dance around all of these extraordinary images, creating an atmosphere steeped in fanciful mystery. It is as though the visionary is seeing far beyond anything we can comprehend, to a world of universal love. For this, the artist chose to paint on the sheets belonging to a honeymoon couple, perhaps for the love and vitality they have shared. The artist seems to pull the form directly out" of the surface of the medium. The patterns rise in squares and swirls of rusts, blacks, grays and whites.
