With imagery reminiscent of a time when medieval knights fought with unparalleled valor, this stunning inlaid bowl sets our imagination spinning on a magical journey back in More »
With imagery reminiscent of a time when medieval knights fought with unparalleled valor, this stunning inlaid bowl sets our imagination spinning on a magical journey back in time. On the interior of the bowl we see the dramatic rendering of medieval characters doing battle with one another as well as with mythological creatures, whose formidable features blend with intricately detailed scroll work, much like that of an ancient illuminated manuscript. A roundel in the center of the bowl, framed by interlocking arches, further enhances the medieval spirit by suggesting to us the interior dome of a magnificent European cathedral. Inlaid patterning in the form of small arches and slats placed along the interior perimeter of the bowl echoes the effect of stained glass windows that might border a cathedral's ceiling. As we experience the fascinating images and patterns on this beautiful bowl we are transported to a world marked by the magnificence of heraldry, pomp and circumstance, both secular and ecclesiastical in nature...a time when the natural and the supernatural wove the intricate pattern of life, much like the patterns within this magnificent inlaid bowl. - (FZ.304)Inlaid Gilt Bronze Bowl - FZ.304Origin: Europe Circa: 1200 AD to 1400 AD

The region of Ife in Nigeria has become known for the naturalism of its art in comparison to the stylized art of other African regions. The area also produced terracotta sculptures and works in ivory, clay, wood, bronze, and even in quartz. The Yoruba tribe regarded Ife as their place of origin as told in the creation myths. The craftsmanship of Ife was later passed on to the kingdom of Benin, which being closer to the sea was better known to early European travelers. The later history of Ife is not yet well documented except for the beautiful bronze busts of kings such as this one. This beautifully sculpted bronze bust of a young nobleman or king is a perfect example of the talented craftsmanship of the area of Ife in Nigeria. His facial expression is one of serenity and confidence, both in himself and in his surroundings. In both hands, he holds two objects that symbolise control and power. He also wears a crown, emphasizing his rank in society.Ife Style Bronze Bust of a Nobleman - PF.3623Origin: Southwestern Nigeria Circa: 19 th Century AD to 20 th Century ADDimensions: 22.75" (57.8cm) high x 13" (33.0cm) wide Catalogue: V19Collection: African Style: Ife Medium: Bronze « Less

As king of a large tribal community, this man would have been highly regarded and respected among the people of his community and feared by the enemy. The bronze figure stands tall with all the necessities required by a king. The robe is wrapped carefully around his waist while his wealth is demonstrated by the large variety of jewelry which adorns his body. The elaborate headpiece however, is the crowning glory of his attire, clearly defining his role within society, alongside the two symbols of his reign which he holds in either hand. The bronze itself has been molded and pitted to exemplify the distinct characteristics of the skin while still allowing the king to look his best. The facial features have also remained true to life, with intelligent eyes and a full, expressive mouth. As a whole, the king has been represented at his very best, demonstrating his influence and his power, remaining immortal not only to the tribe but to the rest of the world as well. - (PF.4001)Ife Style Bronze Sculpture of King - PF.4001Origin: Southwestern Nigeria Circa: 19 th Century AD to 20 th Century ADDimensions: 38" (96.5cm) high x 17" (43.2cm) wide Collection: African Style: Ife Medium: Bronze « Less

A handsome male holding an axe in his right hand stands upon a raised base, which is decorated with open circles around the center. He wears only a broad skirt ornamented with different shapes in relief. A rather intricate network of necklaces crisscross over his chest, including a hanging flask attached to a thick “rope.†His right hand is raised, his torso twisted left in the direction he is staring, and his knees are bent as if he is about to move forwards. Crease lines on his forehead and his balding head suggest that he is a man of middle age, possibly a respected village elder. His ornaments and his dignified demeanor indicate he is someone of importance whose image was cast in bronze in the great tradition of Benin royal art. - (PF.5414)Benin Style Bronze Sculpture of a Man - PF.5414Origin: Southcentral Nigeria Circa: 20 th Century ADDimensions: 20.75" (52.7cm) high x 7" (17.8cm) wide Collection: African Style: Benin

Ife, the capital and religious center of southwest Nigeria, was one of the first Sub-Saharan cities to emerge at the end of the first millennium A.D. A substantial number of anthropomorphic and zoomorphic sculptures, made most frequently in terracotta although brass was also employed, were produced in the region between the 11th and the 15th centuries. This distinctive style is broadly referred to as “Ife,†even though some examples may come from other cities such as Owo. The brass objects especially are strikingly realistic, despite the fact they are almost certainly idealized portraits of dead kings, called Oni. The terracotta heads are more numerous and varied, no doubt a result of the comparative abundance and ease of working the material. Some of the faces, whether made of brass or terracotta, carry vertical parallel incisions, possibly representing scarification or body paint. This bronze sculpture, truncated at the figure’s waist, is a fine example of the Ife style. The overall molding of the figure and forms is remarkably naturalistic considering the general level of abstraction present in most styles of African art. The figure wears a tight fitting conical cap with a large projecting central crest with a star-shaped emblem. Such caps and ornaments occur frequently in Ife portraiture. This crown probably symbolizes the figure’s royal status, as does the series of intricately sculpted necklaces and pendants that weigh down his shoulders. Such necklaces and bracelets were, and still are, a sign of wealth and rank in African society. The figure also bears the pattern of vertical parallel incisions that is the hallmark of the Ife style across his torso and face. This magnificent sculpture reveals all the tremendous luxury and wealth that is Ife, home to one of the greatest artistic flourishings that Africa, and the world, have known. - (PF.6038)

The original seated figure of Tada is among the supreme masterpieces of African art. A product of Ife craftsmen, it was originally located on the ancient northern frontier of the Ife Kingdom in the modern Nupe town of Tada. Although it is unclear why this stunning sculpture was found so far north, it is believed that the work served as a marker indicating that one was entering the realm of Ife. This remarkable figure is famed for its realistic details and mastery of technique. This miniature bronze sculpture is a charming replica of the famed original. The sculptor has even recreated the fragmented arms and truncated leg. The attention to detail captures the essence of the masterpiece including the swelling belly and the wrapper that is overlain with a net of coral beads. The meaning of this replica is as mysterious as that of the Seated Figure of Tada. Is this charming sculpture a souvenir that would accompany a visitor home to impress others with the beauty of Ife craftsmen. Perhaps it was a miniature idol meant to be worshipped in private much like its larger counterpart is honored in public to ensure the fertility of the fields and the tribe. In either case, this work pays homage to one of the pinnacle works of African art. Much like a miniature Eiffle Tower or Statue of Liberty, this replica conjures the grandeur of the masterpiece it honors. - (PF.6044) Bronze Replica of the Ife Seated Figure of Tada -PF.6044Origin: Nigeria Circa: 20 th Century ADDimensions: 9.25" (23.5cm) high Collection: African Style: Ife Style Medium: Bronz « Less
