Antique, 16th -17th century, Polish or Hungarian horseman, War Hammer – Nadziak - Csakany , the iron head formed with a slender conical hammer and down-curved, More »
Antique, 16th -17th century, Polish or Hungarian horseman, War Hammer – Nadziak - Csakany , the iron head formed with a slender conical hammer and down-curved, tapering, beak-shaped rear-fluke, mounted on its wooden haft.
The wooden haft near the iron head has a band of its original, very dry leather; it is possible that the entire haft at some point was covered in leather, or, this is a part of the leather loop for suspending the hammer from the saddle.
MEASUREMENTS: Overall length; 65.8cm (25 7/8 in), length of the head; 13.7 cm (5 3/8 in).
CONDITION: In good condition considering its age, showing the age and usage. Free of any repairs or restoration.
Since the Hungarian and Polish war hammers are very similar, and in some cases are almost the same, we do not want to state that the item is, in fact, a distinguished Hungarian or Polish.
This rare War Hammer is part of an old Canadian collection of antique Arms and Armour which we had acquired recently, including some Eastern European war hammers, axes, armors, helmets and other weapons. Some of these unique items are already posted for sale, and others are in the process of cataloging, and will be posted for sale soon.

Scarce, antique, late 17th – early 18th century, German military sword-saber, with cast brass hilt comprised of slender grip with a pronounced pommel knuckle More »
Scarce, antique, late 17th – early 18th century, German military sword-saber, with cast brass hilt comprised of slender grip with a pronounced pommel knuckle – guard, short quillons and down–curved scollop shell – guard. A slightly curved single edged blade, cut with a slender, full – length fuller along the back-edge, displaying on each side deeply struck and carved marks, including the 'running wolf' of Passau, number 1414, flanked by crosses.
The number 1414, which is stamped on the blade has been variously interpreted, and remains unclear, whether these numbers represent numeric combinations for good fortune, or, perhaps in the 1414 numeric, the Biblical passage from Job 14:14, "..a man dying, he will live again".
In occult lore, the numbers are intended for good fortune, and the 4 often represents Jupiter and as a protective talisman in symbols, also, the 1 and 4 are applied in mathematical combinations based on the lucky number 7. The back of the brass grip is chiseled with regimental marking 2: G p – No 125.
MEASUREMENTS: Overall length 85.5 cm (33 5/8 in), length of the blade: 72.4 cm (28 1/2 in).
CONDITION: Showing the age and usage, slightly bent in the middle with minor flaw (please see the photos).

A very rare authentic 17th century antique top of karacena (scale armour) helmet szyszak of a Polish winged hussar. The dome top is of a characteristic shape and is composed More »
A very rare authentic 17th century antique top of karacena (scale armour) helmet szyszak of a Polish winged hussar. The dome top is of a characteristic shape and is composed of several elements of hand forged steel plates including a large plate with a scalp rim, a smaller plate of similar shape, a circular washer notched with radiating lines, surmounted by a finial, seven rhomboidal shaped rivets near the edges, and a circular ring with four rivets.
Some karacena turban helmets were constructed of thick hide lined and padded by wool or cotton fabric liner. Fitted at the top with large plate and the small iron scales pleats covering the rest of the skull of the helmet. Other examples of karacena helmets are with iron skull, but the majority of this type of helmet has a body made of leather and fabric.
The karacena turban helmets were worn exclusively by higher rank commanders of polish winged hussars, including by the king John II Sobieski. Since they were made during the 17th century in limited number and with the fragility of the leather, not to many of them survived to the present day. Authentic 17th century Polish karacena turban helmets are extremely rare and are hardly ever seen in museums, including museums in Poland, where there are only few examples of this type of the helmet, probably not more than 5.
We had attached to the listing pictures of Polish Karacena turban helmets with the top of similar shape to ours. One from the museum’s collections of National Museum in Krakow, the second from Wawel Royal Castle National Art Collection Krakow, and a picture of a helmet lost during WWII.

APPROXIMATE MEASUREMENTS.
Diameter: 15 cm (5.91 inches).
Height from the top of the finial holder to the bottom of the ring: 4 cm (1.57 Inches).
CONDITION: Signs of usage and wear, pitted overall, minor dents, small crack on the central plate, a minor crack on the edge of the circular ring, and one rivet missing. All of this can be an aspect from an old combat helmet that is over 300 years old.
