The politics of the province of Quebec have always provided inspiration for it''s homegrown poets, musicians, playwrights and composers. In the 1970''s and 80''s (and today!) there was a great uprising of nationalist sentiment amongst the French population of the province who felt that they had been treated as second-class citizens for too long. This social and political malaise was very evident in the outpouring of music and performance pieces - and posters of same - during that period. This group of 5 posters feature theater pieces produced during the period - for better or worse, these pieces of ephemera of the only remnants available - Internet research did not produce any results on the works, the artists or the subjects. These posters were in the private collection of a noted jazz musician and producer and are only a couple of hundreds which we have just received. The others will be appearing in our ebay store shortly. Posters measure: #1 28 x 24 inches, #2 15 x 18 inches, #3 22 x 11, #4 16 x 24, #5 10.5 x 16. Price is for all 5 posters (email us for an image of the 5th poster - we can only show 4 on this listing!). All of our posters, prints and pochoirs are authentic, vintage items. Aside from the title and author, I can find no information on ''Indian Legends'' - it is not to be found on/in Amazon or elsewhere. The cover art for the book, however, has remained, and it is an impressive one color print on thick sepia art paper which seems to incorporate a variety of legends... The other print, for Les Evenements de la pleine lune (The events of the full moon) has a bit more information available: it was a festival which was held to celebrate dance and theater arts in Montreal. I am unclear whether the festival still exists, but for the year of this poster, it evidently included dance, interpretative dance, and music - some by Quebec''s well known and homegrown star, Robert Lepage. These posters were in the private collection of a noted jazz musician and producer and are only a couple of hundreds which we have just received. The others will be appearing in our ebay store shortly. Legends measures 22 x 14 inches, Les Evenements measures 17 x 23 inches - both and are unframed, and price is for 2 posters. Yvan Adam has been described by 20th century poster experts as one of the two most influential Quebec poster artists of the last 50 years (the other being Vittorio Fiorucci). A rough translation from Marc Choko''s definitive work on Quebec posters describes Adam as follows: ''Born in Mont Saint Hilaire, Adam started his career as an illutrator at Le Jour, with a head full of psychedelic posters and reproductions of Toulouse Lautrec and Alphonse Mucha plastered on his walls from floor to ceiling from his adolescence onwards. In 1976 he left for Paris, installed himself in Montmartre where he experimented with painting. Returning to Montreal a year later, he went looking for poster contracts with theaters and film producers. He never looked back. Adam''s curiosity led him to various graphic and technical styles - he designed company logos, album covers, and editorial illustrations. He has worked in film and now designs, among other things, web sites as well as posters. He refuses interviews, does not enter his works in design competitions, and continues to paint, design posters, and create websites. He lives outside of Montreal.'' This poster was designed by Adam for his friends in a jazz ensemble called the Orchestre Sympathique in 1981 for their world tour. Evoking some of the humor and irony for which posters are well-known, it is a tongue in cheek look at musicians on the road... literally! This poster was in the private collection of a noted jazz musician and producer and is only one of hundreds which we have just received. The others will be appearing in our ebay store shortly. The poster measures 27 x 22 inches and is unframed. All of our posters, prints and pochoirs are authentic, vintage items. THIS IS A POSTER FROM THE MONTREAL OLYMPIC GAMES IN 1976 Additional photos available upon request. Other sites sell these posters for upwards of $300US each!! This is a vintage poster and a reproduction. A red Montreal Games Olympic symbol is in the top left of each poster. Text reads: Jeux de la XXIe Olympiade Montreal/Games of the XXI Olympiad Montreal 1976 This series of posters, commissioned by COJO, illustrated the twenty-one sports on the program of the Games of the XXI Olympiad. Each was intended to communicate the action and immediacy of its sport. The Graphics and Design Directorate, therefore, preferred photographic techniques to drawings, where the results might have been colored by the artist''s personal interpretation. In the search for authenticity and using well defined selection criteria, COJO representatives visited Olympic sites in Munich and selected twenty-one color transparencies from among some 200,000 photos. Each photo had to be suitable for enlargement and reproduction, show readily apparent motion not contrary to the rules or special techniques of the sports, and be as spectacular as possible. (Source document: Official Report 1976, Vol. 1, page 320) Poster size: 16-1/2'' x 23-1/2''. Produced by MICH (born Michel Liebeaux, French 1881-1923) and completely different from any of his other works, this visually striking poster is the ONLY one of its kind More »
Produced by MICH (born Michel Liebeaux, French 1881-1923) and completely different from any of his other works, this visually striking poster is the ONLY one of its kind known to exist. Advertising a socialist paper called the Cri du Nord (the Call of the North), which was published daily and offered its services with legal and administrative assistance to its readers, this poster is a masterpiece (in our humble opinion), for a variety of reasons: First off, the visual message is a stunner: the woman - representing France, is offering up a deliciously drawn baby, representing Socialism, to the viewer. To put this in context, France in 1918, when we believe this poster was created (we base this on information in the poster itself, as well as on the death date of the artist Mich, which was in 1923) was hugely influenced by the politics of Europe at the time. According to Wikipedia ''The initial success of the Russian Revolution inspired other revolutionary parties to attempt the same thing unleashing the Revolutions of 1917-23. In the chaotic circumstances of postwar Europe, with the socialist parties divided and discredited, Communist revolutions across Europe seemed a possibility. Communist parties were formed, often from minority or majority factions in most of the world''s socialist parties, which broke away in support of the Leninist model.'' The poster itself mentions that it serialized Le Feu, a book by Henri Barbusse, a former military man turned pacifist (which was published in 1917)... clearly, the political views of those who commissioned the poster, as well as (perhaps) those of the poster artist himself, were leaning towards the change which the Socialists were offering post World War I. This particular poster is also fairly remarkable take it''s graphic use of type - a full century before full-blown use of Helvetica, here we have a poster which uses it (or it''s ancestral typographic grandfather) in a larger-than-life way. According to Jack Rennert, (who has never seen this poster in his 40 years as the pre-eminent expert in the field), ''Michs''s main clients were the bicycle and auto industries at the beginning of the twentieth century., and in the 1912 Salon des Humoristes, je exhibited 50 sporting designs. His drawings also filled the pages of L''Auto, L''Echo de Paris and La Vie Parisienne''. Poster measures 46 x 61 inches, is linen backed and in excellent condition. Soviet Counter-Revolutionary poster ARTIST : Anonymous During the revolution of the 1917 working class managed to overthrow the bourgeois social state, declaring the society without classes. The state belonged to the people in general and nobody in particular. This ideology ruled the country for the next 70 years. Poster text reads ''Deserter of Work'', ''The Deserter of Work Becomes the Voice of the Counter-Revolution''. A friend writes My Russian''s a little rusty but this definitely is a Soviet poster about how ''deserters in the workplace'' are lackeys of the counter-revolution. That pretty much rules out it being printed in 1916, which was a full year before the October Revolution and a couple years before they started to put out these kind of production posters (probably not until the ''War Communism'' period of 1918-1920, and perhaps later). To me, this looks more like something from the 1920s or 1930s so, while we are not quite sure of the exact date of this masterpiece, or of its provenance, there is no doubt of its impact, or its artistry. According to Jack Rennert, a man we fondly call the Poster King, ''You''d think that a play called ''The New Baby'' might feature said child in its promotional material. But here''s the thing - there really isn''t a baby at the center of the comedy, and that''s the crux of this entertainment. The plot concerns a husband who is so bored with country life that he dreams up the idea of having an illegitimate son in London as a way to get into town for an occasional ''night off''. When his wife decides that the child should be adopted, the expected comic tissue of falsehoods and misunderstandings frays and hilarity ensues. Adapted from the German by A. Bourchier, the farce opened in London in 1896 to what a local critic termed ''much mirth''. Several years later, when the play had crossed the Atlantic and entered the repertory of David de Wolf - cleverly called the Baby''s ''chaperone'' on the poster - and his troupe of travelling players, that understated review was translated into the more American howling success''. The cast and director would''ve been totally unfamiliar with the British hinterlands, so this splendid design concentrates on the hi-jinks of the characters and their situation.''At the start of the 20th Century, America was in the full glory of its cultural adolescence, bursting with energy and optimism. In 1900 in New York there were 33 legitimate Broadway theatres, and many more would be built within the next decade to meet growing audience demand. New York''s exploding population was also enjoying increased mobility. In 1904, the city opened its first underground commuter railroad lines. Thanks to these ''subways,'' tens of thousands living far from the theatre district could catch a Broadway show and still sleep in their own beds. Add in the ever-increasing numbers of tourists who came into the city by rail and steamship, and it was easy to see why Broadway could now support more productions and longer runs than ever before.'' We believe this magnificent and awe inspiring poster typifies the best of musical history and musical posters. Printed by the Russell & morgan company, this ginormous (a very technical term) poster for what we think was a musical revue is a masterpiece look at the golf bags! in excellent condition and full of color!. The poster is in very good condition and measures roughly 40.5 x 78.5 inches, mounted on linen. Additional photos and information are available upon request.
