This Arts and Crafts tile was made at the American Encaustic Tile Company of Zanesville Ohio. All hand decorated in a squeeze-bag design, it features an image of a pig in a pen. The detail is superb, down to the nail-heads on fence. It is in excellent unused condition, with one ding to the rear hip of the pig. This tile was photographed for the book, The Encyclopedia Of American Art Tile by Norman Karlson, and can be found in Volume 2, page 55. A rare and desirable example. The tile is eight inches square, framed it is 13.5 inches. Nice sharp mold and a clean uncrazed example. The back is impressed with ROOKWOOD FAIENCE 123AYD. This is the first time I have ever seen this design, a fruit bowl in the Art Deco manner made in the mid 1930''s by the combined companies of American Encaustic, Franklin Faience, and American Olean. The glazing is exceptionally well done, with a mixture of matte and gloss glazes to give the images of the fruits and bowl depth. The back is unmarked on the dust pressed body. The condition is excellent. One of the best examples of this size tile I have seen. A super Arts and Crafts tile of three roses, made by the Wheatley Pottery at the beginning of the 1900''s. Surrounded in a complimentary wood frame in a cherry finish. The tile measures 6.25 inches square and the cuenca design is covered in lightly curdled glazes. The back of the tile has hand incised and impressed numerals. The condition is excellent. I had this tile years ago in a 4 inch version, and it remains one of my favorite designs by an underrated company. This tile measures 4.25 inches square and depicts a juvenile rendition of the state animal of California, the bear. Notice the blocks in the background with the CA. This tile was photographed for the book Encyclopedia of American Art Tile by Norman Karlson and can be found in Volume 4 page 209. The back has the embossed marks '' HERMOSA TRU-JOINT G.McB. & Co U.S.A. Pat. Pending''. The tile is made in the cuerda seca process. There is a flake on the bottom edge and another on the top right corner. A charming tile with a good provenance. American Art Nouveau is rare as hens teeth, but this tile by Robertson Art Tile of Morrisville, PA (1890-1930) shows that it does exist. The sinewy lines of the iris are set against a shaded light blue background. The back has the embossed mark ROBERTSON. The tile measures 3 inches by 6 inches and has been cleaned of all mortar. Tiny flecks at the edges and crazing are highlighted in the picture and are much less noticeable in person.
