Photos provided from a Seattle collection, as an example. Acquired in the early 1990's, a calcified jade box with carvings in the archaic style. We feel however, that it is probably a work crafted during the later Qing Dynasty. The fitted lid bears split tail dragons or chimera in the pursuit of the Pearl of Wisdom and surrounded by an archaic style kangi. In very good condition. 19th C. Size. An attractive example of a hand embossed, leather covered domed box, often referred to as a "Pillow Box". This name apparently a result of the idea that when traveling, one places valuables in such a box and then uses it for a pillow to avoid theft while sleeping. These rectangular boxes could certainly have been used in such a manner but were probably more often the repository of valuable scrolls and documents. This nice old box is probably from Fujian Province, where such good quality work was known. It has nicely wrought brass fittings and handles. The leather does show wear, but no tears or holes, on the sides and top which is complimented by a dark, rich patina that enhances the detailed hand embossed sides. The bottom shows the ususal effects of moisture so often encountered in antique trunks and boxes that were actually used in Chinese homes,(see photo). Size, 25" in length, 6.25" in height and 6.5" in width. Circa 1910.

This item has been SOLD. A fine quality, sterling grade silver box with traditional designs that suggest that it may have been intended for a Bride or as a wedding gift. The artistically executed Peonies in high bas relief with a moon and sparrow in the back ground can be interpreted as symbols of maidenhood and fertility. With a fitted lid and gold gilt interior, the box is in very good condition with only a very few small dents and slight abrasions from use and age. With the craftsman's touch mark on the base. From the early 20th Century, a refined marine ivory carving of Diakoku, one of the seven Lucky Gods. Diakoku is the God of Wealth, Commerce and Trade as well as often considered the God of the Household where he is often found in the kitchen. Shown smiling and holding his golden mallet, one is drawn to the attention to detail not only in the features but also in the fall of the garments and their decoration. Nicely yellowed with age this is perfect in every way with the exception of one small chip in the sleeve of the garment, as shown. Please feel free to contact us with questions. Signed by the artist. This item has been SOLD. A charming, signed ivory netsuke of four small boys playing around a water jar. The water jar helps date this piece to some degree, since during the Meiji period and earlier, water jars, which collected rain from a rain chain, were the major source of water to fight fires. The highly flammable nature of earlier Japanese homes made water storage a necessity and these jars were found outside the doorway of most commoners homes. The color and dark striations help establish age as well as does the muted wear from rubbing against a garment for a long period. A well carved piece for use, and an an attractive subject. 1" in height. Circa 1910 « Less
