For thousands of years, since before recorded history, man has worn amulets and talismans for luck and protection. The stones, feathers, teeth and claws that adorned early cultures eventually gave way to an array of amulets whose powers where as varied as their forms. This splendid little token represents the head of a bull, a creature symbolic of strength, power, and virility, the favorite animal of many male gods. The reddish hue of the stone suggests it may have supplied its wearer with courage and protection in battle. Carved with abstract simplicity, it makes a timeless appeal to the senses. - (PF.1937)Mesopotamian Stone Amulet of a Bull's Head - PF.1937Origin: Northern Syria Circa:3000BCto2000BCDimensions:0.5" (1.3cm) high x 0.625" (1.6cm) wide x 0.75" (1.9cm) depth Collection: Near Eastern Style: Mesopotamian Medium: Stone « Less

Islamic Glass Inkwell - AMD.277, Origin: Central Asia, Circa: 800 AD to 1000 AD, Dimensions: 2.5" (6.4cm) high Collection: Islamic Art, Style: Mold-Blown/Cut, Medium: Glass. This vessel was probably used as an inkwell. It has a flattened collar rim, an internal neck, a cylindrical body cut into facets and a flat base. Over the years, surface has entirely been weathered, resulting in a magnificent silver iridescence and abrasion. The simplicity of the cut patterns and the commercial use of these vessels, probably prompted imitations in other areas of the Islamic world. « Less

Islamic Glass Bottle - AM.0143, Origin: Central Asia, Circa: 800 AD to 900 AD, Dimensions: 5" (12.7cm) high, Collection: Islamic Art, Style: Mold Blown/Tooled, Medium: Glass. More »
Islamic Glass Bottle - AM.0143, Origin: Central Asia, Circa: 800 AD to 900 AD, Dimensions: 5" (12.7cm) high, Collection: Islamic Art, Style: Mold Blown/Tooled, Medium: Glass. This cylindrical bottle has an angular shoulder and a short flared neck. The decoration consists of ridged vertical ribs twisted slightly counter- clockwise against the mould. The decoration on this vessel was created in a mold similar to one of the only two surviving molds - namely, a bronze dipped mold decorated with small lozenge-shaped bosses now in the Corning Museum of Glass. The vertical ribs were twisted by the glassmaker to create the final ridge decoration in the mold. Both the shape of this vessel and the type of opening seem to point to an earlu period of Islamic glass production, probably before the eleventh century and more likely in the tenth. « Less
