Pair of English George I table spoons in the Hanoverian pattern with rat tail bowls, London, 1716 - 1717, Britannia standard (95.84% pure silver), with indistinct maker's More »
Pair of English George I table spoons in the Hanoverian pattern with rat tail bowls, London, 1716 - 1717, Britannia standard (95.84% pure silver), with indistinct maker's marks. Length: 8 inches. These early Georgian tablespoons have a pronounced midrib to the front of the handles and are engraved with owner's block shaded initials R*C over earlier erased initials. They are bottom marked on the stem with hallmarks that include the date letter for 1716-1717, a seated Britannia and Lion's head erased. Maker's marks are worn and are not legible. Condition is otherwise very good with the bowls retaining their original shapes. The Britannia standard of 95.84% pure silver replaced the sterling standard of 92.5% from 1697-1720 to protect the realm's coinage from being melted down for the making of objects. « Less

Decorative berry spoon in the Ivory pattern by Whiting, fashioned in sterling silver with an ornate gilded and chased bowl and with a carved ivory handle, which retains most More »
Decorative berry spoon in the Ivory pattern by Whiting, fashioned in sterling silver with an ornate gilded and chased bowl and with a carved ivory handle, which retains most of its original brown patination. This pattern, #2888, was designed by Charles Osborne and was patented in 1890. Incised owner's monogram on handle. Excellent original condition, with no damage, dents, breaks, or repairs. Size: 8 1/8 inches length. Charles Osborne worked for Tiffany & Co. prior to joining Whiting. There were about 27 pieces produced by Whiting in this line, all with fancy bowls, adorned with ornate piercing and repousse decoration. The ivory handles, for which the pattern is named, were frequently carved and often had a brown stain applied to the lower part of the handle. Engraved monograms could be added to personalize the pieces. For more information about this rare and desirable pattern, see the article featuring it in "Silver Magazine," Jan./Feb. 2001. « Less

A rare George III sterling silver set of caddies: including a pair of tea caddies and a larger matching sugar caddy. London, 1771, by the silversmith William Vincent, who specialized in wares for the tea table, especially tea caddies. Each is of a rectangular form with serpentine shaped sides, decorated with a repousse floral design, and with acanthus capped feet and floral finials, and each bears an engraved family crest of a dove holding an olive branch in its beak. Stamped on each base with a full set of hallmarks. Two lids are also stamped with the lion passant, while the third cover is unmarked and may be a replacement, although the workmanship matches the other caddies identically, just a slightly thicker gauge to the silver; however, this might also be just a variation within the original silversmith's shop. Condition is very good, though there are a few small pinprick-sized holes in two of the covers at the high spots of some of the flowers and a couple of tiny holes at high spots on the side of one caddy. These are too small for tea to fall through and are often encountered on items of this age. All in all this is a rare set in very nice condition, being offered at a very fair price. « Less
