Antique Pearlware
Mocha Quart Mug
Blue Banded with Black & White
Snail Trail Earthworm Pattern
Mocha decorated pottery is a type of dipped ware identified by its “wet-surface†look decorated with crawling worms (‘earthworm’), swirling cats’ eyes, sea life (‘seaweed’), rolling waves, alternating bands of color, trees and cross-hatches and purely random squiggles.
Mochware pieces were factory-made and lathe-turned. Their signature “wet surface“ look was achieved by coating pieces in a runny mixture of clay and water known as “slip,†then applying a tea made of tobacco juice, turpentine, hops, and even urine. The resulting chemical reaction formed dendritic patterns in the glaze. Other designs were painted, scratched or stamped on with fingers, brushes, or other objects, resulting in a multitude of layers and colors. Production may have begun as early as 1792.
Many people assume that mochaware is named for the palette of colors it uses: browns, creams, grays, blacks, and muted tones of blue, green, pumpkin, and yellow. Instead., it refers to the Red Sea port of Mocha (now in modern day Yemen), a city associated in England with the export of dendritic, or moss agates (Mocha stone). The stone features natural striations similar to the ware’s seaweed- and tree-like decorations.
Manufactured by potteries throughout Great Britain, France, and North America, mocha was the cheapest decorated ware available. Most British production went to export whereas France and North America manufactured for the home markets. Archaeological finds throughout the eastern United States suggest that mocha was used in taverns and homes, from lowly slave quarters to Thomas Jefferson's Monticello and Poplar Forest. After the mid-19th century, British imports waned, with those potteries still making mocha concentrating on government-stamped capacity-verified measures (jugs and mugs) for use in pubs and markets. North American product was based entirely on yellow or buff-colored bodies banded in black with broad white slip bands on which the dendritic markings appeared. Some British makers used yellow-firing clay, too, but the bulk of the wares were based on white bodies, the earliest being creamware and pearlware, while later, heavier and thicker bodies resembled ironstone, known best to archaeologists simply as "whiteware".
Because it was used on a daily basis, few examples of original mochaware have survived over the years, making it a rare American collectible.
This piece is an English Pearlware Mocha Quart Mug ex-collection of William Lewan that is decorated in a blue banded with black and white snail trail earthworm pattern. It measures 6†high x 4 ½†in diameter. It has hairline cracks, but is nonetheless an extremely desirable piece.

For sale is a very nice piece of art pottery made by The Brush McCoy Company of Roseville, Ohio. The shape is considered cabinet Vase. The Pattern is one of Brush McCoy's most sought after patterns called, "Amaryllis". The vase 5 1/4" and is 2 5/8" in diameter. The opening of the Vase is 1 13/16" in diameter outside measurement.
The Vase displays embossed long stemmed Amaryllis in full bloom bordering the shoulder of the vase. They are growing up an out of vertical narrow leaves for a nice Arts and Crafts flair. There is some extra attention drawn to the leaves as you can see the veining on them in the middle. You can also see the pistils and stamens in the center of the Amaryllis flowers. The Vase is glazed in a high gloss Majolica style glaze and the colors are just beautiful. The background is a deep pea green with moss green background glaze and the Flowers are done in a beautiful Burgundy There are no 2 flowers with the same. There are deep and light colored flowers.
The Vase is considered to be in Excellent Condition as there are no cracks, chips, nicks or dings. There is a stilt pull on the bottom. This is factory and not considered damage. This happens when the Vase is taken from the oven. They sit on a tripod stilt. You can clearly see the 3 marks on this vase. The Vase is not signed but there is no doubt this is the Amaryllis Pattern made by Brush McCoy as this pattern is well documented.
These Cabinet Vases are quite hard to find. These were small and when found they usually have severe damage. This one doesn't even have a flea nick. This Vase was made, Circa 1910-1920. « Less

For Sale is a very unusual piece of pottery made by a factory in Japan to compete with Weller's well known and desirable pattern, Coppertone. The shape is a vase or figural vessel and measures approximately 4" tall, 4 3/4" in overall length and 3 3/4" deep.
The Vase depicts a frog clinging to a Water Lily in full bloom perched upon a lily pad. The frog and lotus blossom have crisp details and is molded from an original Weller Coppertone frog as it is the same exact size and form everyone is familiar with. The difference is all in the high gloss Jade Green glaze accented with pink highlights for the details. There is also a slight frothy white glaze around the edge of the lily pad and tips of the flower petals.
The piece is signed on the bottom with an impressed "MADE IN JAPAN" in block letters. It is somewhat difficult to see and when I first picked up this little piece I was baffled that I had never come across a Coppertone piece in a high gloss glaze before. Imagine my surprise after closer examination to find out it is a vintage import. The clay on the bottom is even close to the color of Ohio Valley Clay.
The Vase is considered to be in Excellent Condition as there are no cracks, chips, nicks or dings. There is a firing line or separation of the clay by the center hole on the bottom that happened during manufacturing and does not show or hurt the value. This is rather a rare find. You can search the Internet and Ebay and you will have a problem in finding a similar one. I have never seen one before this one and I have collected and sold Weller Coppertone for some 38 Years.
The Vase was more than likely made sometime during the 1930's. « Less
