Boylston Antiques is Proud to Offer for Sale
A Spindle Back Stenciled Cottage Side Chair C. 1860-1875
A Spindle Back Cottage Side Chair with a stenciled crest rail. The crest rail is slightly concave, about 3 inches wide, with the upper edge a continuous flat curve. The lower edge is scroll arched. The ends of the rail extend beyond the vase and ring turned back uprights. Between this rail and a conforming cross slat are four vase, knob and ring turned spindles.
• The crest rail is stenciled with gold floral and leaf forms on a black ground. The black ground is rimmed with mustard.
• The cane seat is a simplified shield shape. The cane is in good condition for its age.
• The front legs are tapered, cylinder, knob and ring turned.
• The rear legs are a continuation of the rear stiles, plain turned, tapered and flaired.
• The rear stiles are vase, knob and ring turned, with olive-green bands rimmed by mustard on each side.
• The front stretcher is vase and ring turned, with an olive green band ringed by mustard.
• The double side stretchers and single rear stretcher are plain.
• The crest rail height is 33†from the floor.
• The seat sits 17 1/2†from the floor.
• The seat is 15 1/2†wide at the front, tapering down to 12 ½†at the rear.
• The seat depth is 15â€.
• The chair weight is 7 pounds.
A drawing of this type of chair may be found on P. 74 of Thomas Ormsbee’s book entitled “A Field Guide to American Victorian Furnitureâ€.
This chair is in as found condition. The surface patina is nicked, worn and flaked, as expected in a chair approaching 153 years of age. The chair joints are not really loose but somewhat fragile. The chair rocks slightly under weight; this would not be a good chair for heavy use. This style of chair is dainty and meant more for display. There is a vintage repair to some cracks on the rear right leg and some vintage repairs to the rear seat stile.
This chair may be picked up in Boylston, MA.

A splendid pair of antique Art Deco slip shade sconces by Consolidated Glass, dating from the 1920’s or 1930’s. Salvaged from St. Louis, the sconces feature a ziggurat backplate with a sunburst at the bottom and roses climbing up the sides. The slipper shade features a matching design, with roses down the center and along the edges, with a Deco geometric design between. These wall lamps are in excellent condition. The shades are in very good antique condition with no cracks or breaks, just the expected fleabites around the edges of the shades. The sconces have been professionally rewired and come with all the necessary attachments for modern installation. We kept the original nonfunctioning turn switches for nostalgia’s sake; however, we will gladly replace them with new ones if desired. The sconces measure 11-1/8†tall, 6-7/8†wide, and project 4-7/8†from the wall.

This single door china cabinet features 3 removable wood shelves which have a double set of grooves for the vertical display of fine china. The top shelf is fitted with brass cup hooks underneath, to hang and display fine china cups.
The oak in this cabinet is all solid with the exception of the back panel, which is oak veneer.
The early glass in this cabinet is delightfully wavy. The main body of the cabinet has 4 panes of glass, with another in the door. The 2 front panes of glass are surmounted by oak dividers.
The predominant style of this cabinet is Arts & Crafts, or Mission, with its plain, perpendicular lines. The feet and legs display an Edwardian trend.
The lock on the door is functional and the original key has survived.
There is no maker’s name in evidence. The only markings on the cabinet are some stenciled numbers on the upper rear panel.
Overall dimensions are:
• Height of cabinet is 59 ¼ inches.
• Width of cabinet is 40 inches.
• Width of cabinet top is 43 inches.
• Depth of cabinet is 12 ½ inches.
• Depth of cabinet top is 14 ¼ inches.
• Door dimensions are 45 inches by 19 inches.
• Legs are 11 ½ inches tall.
• Overall Weight is approx. 80 lbs.
Condition: This cabinet is generally very sturdy and in good condition. However, the front bun feet are missing all of the rounded segments, rendering them square. The front right leg facing is missing a segment of the segmented skirt which ornaments the leg just under the turned knob. The top of the cabinet displays some flecks of paint. There is also a light paint splash on the right side facing (see photo). One suspects that the room ceiling was painted with the cabinet in place.
This cabinet may be picked up in Boylston, MA.
