In the early 1900''s many pottery companies competed with Grueby''s success at organic forms with their own leaf vases. The leaves of this jardiniere are molded and the entire piece is covered in a thick, white, ironstone type glaze. It is unmarked, but certainly of Ohio origin, and most likely made by Zanesville Stoneware. The condition is very good, having one small chip at the base of the raised foot. This is the first time I have ever seen this design, a fruit bowl in the Art Deco manner made in the mid 1930''s by the combined companies of American Encaustic, Franklin Faience, and American Olean. The glazing is exceptionally well done, with a mixture of matte and gloss glazes to give the images of the fruits and bowl depth. The back is unmarked on the dust pressed body. The tile measures 6.25 inches square and the cuenca design is covered in lightly curdled glazes. The back of the tile has hand incised and impressed numerals. The condition is excellent. This tile measures 4.25 inches square and depicts a juvenile rendition of the state animal of California, the bear. Notice the blocks in the background with the CA. This tile was photographed for the book Encyclopedia of American Art Tile by Norman Karlson and can be found in Volume 4 page 209. The back has the embossed marks '' HERMOSA TRU-JOINT G.McB. & Co U.S.A. Pat. Pending''. The tile is made in the cuerda seca process. There is a flake on the bottom edge and another on the top right corner. A charming tile with a good provenance.
