Doris Ullman photograph of John Jacob Niles playing the piano. Platinum print circa 1930. Ulmann was born in NYC in 1882, and died there in 1934. The J. Paul Getty museum biography notes that "she preserved the rural cultures of the southeastern United States through her photographs. She worked particularly in the "Southern Highlands" of the Appalachian Mountains, creating portraits of the residents. In 1933, she contributed photographs to Roll, Jordan, Roll, a book by novelist Julia Peterkin about the vanishing black culture, known as Gullah, of the South Carolina islands and coastal areas. In collaboration with musician, actor, and folklorist John Jacob Niles, she made what Niles called annual "folklore and photographic expeditions" to the Southern Highlands between 1928 and 1934.
Ulmann's equipment was somewhat cumbersome and old-fashioned for her time. She most often used a 6½ x 8½ inch, tripod-mounted view camera, although the lightweight, hand-held camera was more prevalent, and she produced soft-focus platinum prints. The photograph measures 6" x 7.75", and is museum mounted in a walnut 14.5" x 16" frame. Shipping extra. Connecticut residents and buyers picking up in Connecticut add 6.35% state sales tax. Buyers outside the USA are responsible for any taxes, tariffs or customs that might apply. *** If you wish to see examples of similar items we have sold and/or appraised please go to our affiliate site www.OneofaKindAntiques.com and click the Archives / Homepage logo *** « Less

Colin, Paul
15 x 23
According to Wikipedia, Paul Colin (27 June 1892 in Nancy, France - 18 June 1985 in Nogent-sur-Marne) was one of FranceÕs greatest poster artists. Made famous in 1925 by his poster for the Revue NÂgre, which helped to launch the career of JosŽphine Baker (who became his mistress), he worked for over forty years in the theatre, creating not only posters but also numerous sets and costumes. Very Art dŽco at the outset, his style quickly became highly personal and impossible to categorize: the synthetic accuracy of his portraits, the evocative force of his posters for grand causes so marked him as a master of visual communication that his work today remains relevant and fresh. A student of EugÂne Vallin and of Victor ProuvŽ, he is considered a master of the modern school of poster art. He is the author of over 1400 posters and many theatrical set and costume designs.' While this short description does much to highlight some of Colin's style, it doesn't quite do him justice - he epitomized the very best of Deco design: there was nothing superfluous in his posters, nothing extra, and yet every detail was present. That kind of craftsmanship is highly evident in this aviation poster as well. 'Three years after his excellent design for the 1946 event, Colin conceived another brilliant work for the 18th Parisian International Air Show. Once again emphasizing the worldwide nature of the fly-in, he places a jet repeatedly circling the golden globe through a break in the clouds. Another fine example of uncluttered brevity.

Damare
48 x 34
It's hard to imagine that DamarŽ's dimwitted platoon of Empiric generals made much of an impact in the manner of crowd control. So it's fairly safe to assume that the 'it' in the title of the 'You're Gonna get it!' revue playing at the Parisiana could only be referring to an evening of high jinks and hilarity. No biographical data for DamarŽ is available, yet he (or she) worked for the Folies BergÂres, the Olympia and other top music halls for years, always coming up with humorous, attnetion-getting designs of this sort.' (Rennert) This poster, reminds me very much of a British movie made a few years ago called the Full Monty (and if it doesnt ring a bell, I suppose you'll have to Google it, You Tube it or research it some other way because you're obviously way too young...!) Poster is in excellent condition with original tax stamp* is linen-backed and measures 48 x 34 inches. *tax stamps are a good indicator that a poster is truly vintage. A tax had to be paid when the poster was 'posted' - so that the proper authorities could collect the proper taxes... reproductions generally dont take this factor into account, and so tax stamps (or fake tax stamps) dont generally appear on repros.
