47 x 31
This great big, honking French vintage poster is, I think, from just after World War One (I'm using the graphic style, the typographic style, the age of the paper and the quality of the paper as clues), and it is advertising American army surplus as a great value for French back-to-school. I think the concept is hysterical - imagine all these little French kids going to school with army surplus backpacks.... the visual makes me giggle because I think of French kids as way too prim and proper to be carrying that kind of schoolbag. Meanwhile the drill sargeant in the top left corner is literally ordering you to pick up your supplies THIS MINUTE!!

Sagot, Edmond 16 x 20
In 1881 Edmond Sagot opened a shop in Paris dealing in rare and contemporary prints. He rapidly became the most influential fine print dealer of his day. He was also the first art dealer to add illustrated posters to his inventory and his interest in them helped to increase their already growing popularity. In order to advertise his gallery and to promote the artists he published, Sagot commissioned posters during the 1890's from well known masters thus concurrently creating and expanding the market (brilliant marketing, that!) This is one of a pair of posters we recently purchased in Paris, printed by Sagot's atelier (with the notation on the far right side of both tout droit reserve' - all rights reserved, and designed by the artist PB,(initials in top left hand corner of the piece), P. Barroni ... I saw this in a gallery in Paris and fell in love with the man in the image: an escrimeur, a fencer, you can almost see the world-weariness in his eyes, and in the droop of his moustache... I love the hair, the fact that you can't really see below the beginning of his shoulders... While not traditionally handsome, there is something quite compelling about this man...

A wonderful pair of antique Neoclassical double-arm sconces, dating from the 1920’s. Made and signed by Radiant, each sconce is crowned with an urn hung with garlands, atop an oval back plate. The backplate features a floret button in the center. At the base of the back plate, volutes connect the back plate to the double arm, which curves outward in a U shape. The center is ornamented with a diamond motif, flanked by florets and foliate detail. Each arm ends in a foliate diamond, atop which sits a cutout foliate bobeche. The bottom of each arm is embellished with a finial. These wall lamps are in excellent condition; they have been professionally rewired and come with all the necessary attachments for modern installation. We kept the original nonfunctioning turn switches for nostalgia’s sake; however, we will gladly replace them with new ones if desired. The sconces measure 9 ½†wide, 12 ¼†tall, and extend 4†from the wall.
