“An exceptional French Louis XVI Style Ormolu-Mounted and Marble-Topped Center Table, circa 1890″ This desk has been consigned from a local estate and is a virtual mate to a desk made for Marie-Antoinette for her bed-chamber at the “Chateau de Saint Cloud” The model for this particular table is based on a design by Adam Weisweiler which is illustrated in “French Furniture Makers: The Art of the Ebeniste from Louis XVI to the Revolution”, by A. Pradere, published in Paris, 1989, and is shown on page 389. It was so fashionable and successful in terms of form, that it was widely copied by the very best Parisian cabinetmakers in the last quarter of the nineteenth century, most notably by “Maison Fourdinois”. His firm’s example was shown at the “Exposition des arts du bois” which was organized in 1882 by the “Union centrale des Arts Decoratifs” . The marble top on the table shown here has turreted corners with an elaborately decorated frieze featuring exotic wood veneers, ormolu swags, and a “Griffin” motif on the central drawer. The four legs consist of four “caryatids” above “spiral” twisted legs. The stretcher on the bottom is sinuously curved and features a central pierced ormolu basket. DIMENSIONS: Height is 30 3/4″, Length is 33″ , Depth is 19 3/4″. CONDITION: Exceptional, with no breaks or repairs with a very fine finish. The ormolu mounts are dazzling. It has been photographed “in-situ” at the owners home. Additional photographs are available to interested parties upon request. NOTES: A very similar desk, after one commissioned by Marie-Antoinette’s for her bed-chamber at “Saint Cloud”, was sold at Sotheby’s, London, 2005. A slightly larger version was example from the same era, was sold at Sotheby’s in New York, 2001, from the Marshall B. Coyne Collection. This desk is a consignment from a local estate. This large (20 inches tall) American Rennaisance Revival Wall sconce light probably started out as a gas light and was electrofied. Based on the size this was probably in a large mansion or a commercial building. Simply magnificient. Currently with wire added to plug in, but designed to be direct wired. Gorgeous cast desails. The globe is a full 8 inches across and I have seen just globes like these sell for over 150.00 by themselves. Wonderful etched glass design. This piece will look great in any home. Obviously the globe will require special packaging if you want this shipped (please inquire. For safety sake we'd rather this be picked up but can work with your shipper.
