Soroku Toyoshima aluminum abstract fish sculpture c1968. Incised signature on base. The sculpture measures 28" x 10.5" x 3.5" and is in wonderful condition. Just in from an important CT estate. Soroku Toyoshima was a Japanese artist and sculptor born in 1940. Toyoshima was a member of the Neo-Dadaism Orgainzation. To see other examples of the artist work go to Lot 587 - Dawson's, Morris Plains (February 08, 1997) and Rago auction April 2004 lot 245. There is an exhibition listing in the New York Magazine April 13, 1970 issue for an exhibit by Toyoshima at the Katz gallery 38 E 63 NYC through April 18 1970. and in December 1969 titled "Young New York". Neo-Dadaism Organizers were a group of Japanese artists who showed at the Yomiuri Independent exhibitions of the late 1950s and developed ‘anti-art’ activities modeled on those of the DADA movement. There were frequent dissolutions and reformings, but the group that formed in March 1960 included Masunobu Yoshimura (b 1932), Genpei Akasegawa (b 1937),Shusaku Arakawa, Sho Kazakura, Ushio Shinohara (b 1933) and Soroku Toyoshima (and later Shintaro Tanaka (b 1940) and Shin Kinoshita); with the exception of Tetsumi Kudo and Tomio Miki, who associated with the group but never joined, it seemed then to comprise all the major ‘anti-art’ artists in Japan. Here is a quote from his son Tak Toyosihma who's Asian American-themed comic strip, Secret Asian Man, is now nationally syndicated in major newspapers across the United States." I am also certainly inspired by both of my artistic parents as well as my older brother whose artistic skills I grew up being jealous of Toyoshima adds. My dad, Soroku Toyoshima, was one of a few neo-Dadaist artists coming out of Japan during the 1950s and 1960s, and has shown his work at the Tokyo Museum as well as a number of other shows in Japan and NYC ". « Less

George Arthur Hays (1854-1945) cow landscape oil painting. Measures 15 x 21 inches framed. Small old repair, signed lower left. Bio from RogerKingFineArts.com. George Arthur Hays (1854-1945) is one of Rhode Island's most popular 19th-century artists. He was born in Greenville, New Hampshire and spent his adult life in Providence, keeping a studio at the Woods Building on College Street. Hays was a member of the Providence Art Club, where he exhibited from 1888 to 1940, the Society for Independent Artists, the Copley Society, and the Providence Water Color Club. Self-taught, Hays painted in oils and watercolors and is best known for tranquil landscapes featuring cows and sheep. Records indicate that he painted scenery for "Keith's Circuit," and for Boston's Park Theatre in 1887. His works have an enduring charm that have endeared them to generations of collectors, and his penchant for depicting grazing livestock, whether singly or in flocks, in bucolic settings, seemingly never flagged. Stylistically, Hays' works seem to derive their inspiration from the Barbizon School and French animal portraiture, an offshoot of the Barbizon tradition that dignified work animals, imbuing them with a sense of patient endurance and uncomplaining service. Hays often created companion paintings, one of sheep and another of cows, but rarely combined the two animals within the same composition Shipping extra. Connecticut residents and buyers picking up in Connecticut add 6.35% state sales tax. Buyers outside the USA are responsible for any taxes, tariffs or customs that might apply. *** If you wish to see examples of similar items we have sold and/or appraised please go to our affiliate site www.OneofaKindAntiques.com and click the Archives / Homepage logo *** « Less

Published by Currier & Ives in 1870, this print, “Wild Duck Shooting/On the Wing,†is a lithograph with hand coloring on paper. It is Conningham 6671. A small folio print, the image size is 8 3/16†x 12 7/16â€. Margins are greater than 3/4†except for the 11/16†top. The print has very light toning with very few scattered fox marks. There is also an unobtrusive center crease. The image is sharp, clear and bright. It is framed in a period frame with acid-free backing. Frame is missing some veneer.
My father was a collector of Currier & Ives and this beautiful print is from his estate collection. It would be a wonderful addition to anyone’s collection.

Henry Rankin Poore The Wood Gatherers landscape oil painting c1900. Frame measures 29 x 39 inches. The painting 20 x 30 inches. Bio from AskArt.com Born in Newark, New More »
Henry Rankin Poore The Wood Gatherers landscape oil painting c1900. Frame measures 29 x 39 inches. The painting 20 x 30 inches. Bio from AskArt.com Born in Newark, New Jersey, Henry Rankin Poore became a painter of rural landscape subjects, fox hunting, portraits, and animals. He has been described as a "spirited and versatile artist, able to paint on diverse themes and noted for his sporting pictures as well as genre and landscape paintings." (Zellman 544)
He was raised in California and planned to study for the ministry. However, the art exhibition section of the 1874 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia re-directed his goals.
In the early 1880s, he traveled to New Mexico and Colorado, and was the first American artist to have a painting published with a reference to the Taos Pueblo. This depiction was a burro train leaving the Pueblo and is recorded as being done in 1882. His mining illustrations of Colorado from that same trip were published in Harper's Weekly. In 1888, he is listed as having been in Taos again.
To insure his art training, he studied at the National Academy of Design in New York for a year and then with Peter Moran at the Pennsylvania School of Fine Arts. He became a popular painter during this time of dogs, hunting and western mining, and made enough money from his art sales to study at the University of Pennsylvania, graduating in 1883. That year until 1885, he studied in Paris with William Bouguereau at the Academie Julian and was also in Paris again in 1892 following a foxhunting and sketching trip to England.
In 1890, he became a special agent for the United States Census Bureau to illustrate the "Report on the Condition of Fifteen Pueblos of New Mexico in 1890." Collaborating with him were artists Peter Moran, Julian Scott, Gilbert Gaul and Walter Shirlaw.
Henry Rankin Poore was a long-time active artist in Philadelphia, and from 1890, taught at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. During this period, he turned his painting subjects to more ordinary genre---humble persons going about everyday life. This work has been described as being similary to that of the Barbizon painter Jean Millet (1814-1875). Poore also became part of the Art Colony at Old Lyme, Connecticut where, to get his rural landscape subjects, he constructed a portable studio drawn by oxen. He then created pictures of the oxen pulling farm laborers on hay carts.
He lived at the end of his life in Orange, New Jersey where he died in 1940. Shipping extra.
