Rembrandt “Girl With a Basket†Etching
Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (July 15, 1606 — October 4, 1669) was a Dutch painter and etcher. He is generally considered one of the greatest painters and printmakers in European art history and the most important in Dutch history. His contributions to art came in a period that historians call the Dutch Golden Age.
Having achieved youthful success as a portrait painter, his later years were marked by personal tragedy and financial hardship. Yet his drawings and paintings were popular throughout his lifetime, his reputation as an artist remained high and for twenty years he taught nearly every important Dutch painter. Rembrandt’s greatest creative triumphs are exemplified especially in his portraits of his contemporaries, self-portraits and illustrations of scenes from the Bible. The self-portraits form a unique and intimate biography, in which the artist surveyed himself without vanity and with the utmost sincerity.
In both painting and printmaking he exhibited a complete knowledge of classical iconography, which he molded to fit the requirements of his own experience; thus, the depiction of a biblical scene was informed by Rembrandt’s knowledge of the specific text, his assimilation of classical composition, and his observations of the Jewish population of Amsterdam. Because of his empathy for the human condition, he has been called “one of the great prophets of civilization.â€

Jean-François Millet (October 4, 1814 — January 20, 1875) was a French painter and print-maker ) etchings , wood cuts and Lithography) and one of the founders of the Barbizon school in rural France. Millet is noted for his scenes of peasant farmers; he can be categorized as part of the naturalism and realism movements.
After his first painting, a portrait, was accepted at the Salon of 1840, Millet returned to Cherbourg to begin a career as a portrait painter. However, the following year he married Pauline-Virginie Ono, and they moved to Paris. After rejections at the Salon of 1843 and Pauline's death by consumption, Millet returned again to Cherbourg.] In 1845 Millet moved to Le Havre with Catherine Lemaire, whom he would marry in a civil ceremony in 1853; they would have nine children, and remain together for the rest of Millet's life. In Le Havre he painted portraits and small genre pieces for several months, before moving back to Paris.
It was in Paris in the middle 1840s that Millet befriended Constant Troyon, Narcisse Diaz, Charles Jacque, and Théodore Rousseau, artists who, like Millet, would become associated with the Barbizon school; Honoré Daumier, whose figure draftsmanship would influence Millet's subsequent rendering of peasant subjects; and Alfred Sensier, a government bureaucrat who would become a lifelong supporter and eventually the artist's biographer. In 1847 his first Salon success came with the exhibition of a painting Oedipus Taken down from the Tree, and in 1848 his Winnower was bought by the government.

Charles Méryon (23 November 1821 – 13 February 1868), was a French artist, who worked almost entirely in etching, as he suffered from colour-blindness. Although now little-known in the English-speaking world, he is generally recognised as the most significant etcher of 19th century France. He also suffered from mental illness, dying in an asylum. His most famous work is a series of views of Paris. « Less

Hendrik Goltzius (January or February 1558 — January 1, 1617, Haarlem), was a Dutch printmaker, draftsman, and painter. He was the leading Dutch engraver of the early Baroque period, or Northern Mannerism, noted for his sophisticated technique and the “exuberance†of his compositions. According to A. Hyatt Mayor, Goltzius “was the last professional engraver who drew with the authority of a good painter and the last who invented many pictures for others to copyâ€. In middle age he also began to produce paintings.
Holstein credits 388 prints to him, with a further 574 by other print makers after his designs.
In his command of the burin Goltzius is said to rival that of Dürer‘s. He made engravings of Bartholomeus Spranger paintings, thus increasing the fame of the latter - and his own. Goltzius began painting at the age of forty-two; some of his paintings can be found in Vienna. He also executed a few chiaroscuro woodcuts. He was the stepfather of engraver Jacob Matham.
The Engraver Jacob de Gheyn also known as Jacques de Gheyn II) (1565–1629 was a Dutch painter and engraver, whose work shows the transition from Northern Mannerism to Dutch realism over the course of his career.
De Gheyn received his first training from his father, Jacob de Gheyn I,a glass painter, engraver and draftsman. In 1585, he moved to Harlem, and studied under Hendrik Goltzius for the next five years. He moved again to Leiden in the middle of the 1590s. His work attracted the attention of wealthy sponsors, and his first commission was for an engraving of the Siege of Geertruidenberg from Maurice of Nassau, Prince of Orange. This event from March 27th to June 24th 1593, had been more of a demonstration of power by Prince Maurits rather than an actual war and had even attracted tourists. As a publicity stunt, the siege and its subsequent engraving were successful in propagating an image of Prince Maurits as an able general. « Less

John French Sloan (August 2, 1871 — September 7, 1951) was an American artist. As a member of The Eight, a group of American artists, he became a leading figure in the Ashcan School of realist artists. He was known for his urban genre painting and ability to capture the essence of neighborhood life in New York City, often through his window. Sloan has been called “the premier artist of the Ashcan School who painted the inexhaustible energy and life of New York City during the first decades of the twentieth centuryâ€, and an “early twentieth-century realist painter who embraced the principles of socialism and placed his artistic talents at the service of those beliefs.
By 1903 he had produced about sixty oil paintings in total. In April 1904, Sloan moved to New York City, and soon found quarters in Greenwich Village where he painted some of his best-known works, including McSorley’s Bar, Sixth Avenue Elevated at Third Street, and Wake of the Ferry. His time in New York was his most prolific period, but he sold little, and he continued to rely on his earnings as a freelancer for The Philadelphia Press, for which he continued to draw weekly puzzles until 1910. By 1905 he was supplementing this income by drawing illustrations for books (including various works by Charles de Kock ,The Moonstone and for such journals as Collier’s Weekly , Good Housekeeping, Harper’s Weekly, The Saturday Evening Post, andScribner’s among others. « Less

Amand-Durand (after Rembrandt) Abraham parlant a Isaac Etching
Great image conceived by Rembrandt and etched by Armand Durand and pulled from the copper plate in late 19th century impression on arches laid paper with margins. Etched work measures approximately 4.5" by 6". This is in mint condition.
Rembrandt created his etchings in the 1600's, but by the 1800's the plates for the etchings were worn and in poor condition. Armand Durand, a well respected engraver, dedicated the major part of his life re-creating Rembrandt's 347 etchings in exacting detail. Armand-Durand used as his guide, not the worn and flat plates, but the first and second state etchings of the master's original works. Durand's original etchings were so well respected they were purchased by major collectors throughout Europe, and as well as the Louvre Museum in Paris and the French Biblioteque Nationale.

Art Deco is an eclectic artistic and design style that began in Paris in the 1920s and flourished internationally throughout the 1930s and into the World War II era. The style influenced all areas of design, including architecture and interior design, industrial design, fashion and jewelry, as well as the visual arts such as painting, graphic arts and film. The term "art deco" was coined in 1966, after an exhibition in Paris, 'Les Années 25' sub-titled Art Deco celebrating the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes (International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts) that was the culmination of style moderne in Paris. At its best, art deco represented elegance, glamour, functionality, and modernity. Art deco's linear symmetry was a distinct departure from the flowing asymmetrical organic curves of its predecessor style art nouveau; it embraced influences from many different styles of the early twentieth century, including neoclassical, constructivism, cubism, modernism and futurism and drew inspiration from ancient Egyptian and Aztec forms. Although many design movements have political or philosophical beginnings or intentions, art deco was purely decorative.
Art deco experienced a decline in popularity during the late 1930s and early 1940s, but had a resurgence during the 1960s. « Less
