Circa 1885. Exceptionally beautiful and unique American Aesthetic Movement, hinged, folding, double picture frame. I have never seen anything like this gem. One side is bursting with a variety of three dimensional Japanesque style flowers in shades of copper and brass on a bronze back round. The other side is a flowing garland of more conventional blooms and leaves in solid cast brass also against a bronze back round, also quite three dimensional. Both sides are joined by a three part brass hinge formed to look like bamboo. The frames are all original with a lovely mellow patina on all the metals. In very fine "as found" condition with some slight pinching on the outside edge of the frame. 12 1/4" wide x 8 1/4" tall, over-all, each side is 6" wide x 8 1/4" tall and holds a 4 1/2" x 6 3/4" photo. The shadow box is in good condition for its age, although we do not know the exact age or date it was made. The box is 31 1/8 inches tall by 25 1/8 inches wide and 6 7/8 inches thick and weighs 17 pounds. We do have more photographs that we can email if you are interested. USA Circa 1930's An extremely rare and important Modernist frame by Newcomb-Macklin. Dating to the 1930's, this frame has a rippled and polychromed gesso design. There is a small piece missing from the bottom left hand corner. The gesso shows various cracks throughout from age. Newcomb-Macklin was a picture frame company with offices in New York, Chicago and Taos, New Mexico. The company was founded in 1871 and employed highly skilled carvers, gilders and artisans to create frames for painters such as the American masters Bellows and Sargent to name just two. In addition to their offices, Newcomb-Macklin also employed traveling salesmen.   « Less
