Antiqiue, sterling silver box. Made by the Gorham Company, circa 1880-1890's. Approx 3 1/2 inches high. Base just under 3 inches in diameter. Weighs 125.5grams. Box may have originally been used as a vanity item, as a tea caddy to store tea, or any other substance. Cylindrical in shape with a fitted lid, slightly smaller in diameter than the bottom. The entire surface of the bottom is luxuriantly decorated in fine repousse work, depicting a variety of flowers and foliage. The extent of the details and the magnificent workmanship are exceptional. The influence of Japanese objects of vertu can be seen in the design which strongly echoes their work, both in style and quality. Similar pieces were made by other companies, but rarely does one see such rich beauty. The beaded rims of the lid and fine monogram AG/AJ are the sole decoration of the lid. The quality of the monogram indicates the overall quality of the box. The box is hallmarked underneath as follows: the Gorham logo (lion, anchor, Gothic G); 655; STERLING. The box is in very good condition with no damage / restoration of any sort to be found. « Less

For sale is a lovely sterling silver serving spoon by Wood & Hughes of New York, NY. The pattern is called "Venetian" c.1875. Approximately 7 1/2" long and 1.56 troy ounces. Monogrammed "Newborn" on the front side of the handle. On the back side it reads "1859. Dec. 31. 1884." This was most likely a 25th anniversary gift which is still in the original box. The bowl is gilt with beautiful engraving inside. The inside of the box is in very good condition. According to Rainwater, In 1833 William Gale Sr. formed a partnership with Jacob Wood and Jasper H. Hughes, under the name Gale, Wood & Hughes. Wood & Hughes had served apprenticeships under Gale. In 1845 they left to form their own company. Wood & Hughes was in business from 1845-1899. They manufactured a full line of solid silver tableware, with a particularly wide selection of ornamental flatware. A disastrous fire in 1891 resulted in the loss of records, models and patterns. The company neveer fully recovered from this blow and by 1899 the partners determined to sell out. Mr. Frost of the retail firm of Black Starr & Frost, persuaded Clarence Dunn with his friends Charles Graff and William Washburn to buy out Wood & Hughes. Black Starr & Frost wanted to develop a special relationship with a quality silverware manufacturer. Graff, Washburn & Dunn filled that role admirably. Marks include W & H, PAT.1878, STERLING. There is also a lable on the box that reads, E.S. Ettenheimer & Co., JEWELERS, Cor. State and Main Sts., Rochester, - N.Y. Very good condition. « Less
