In the shape of a boat, finely carved ivory with tobacco grate in the front portion and snuff container at the rear. The snuff hole is the mouth of the mask on the bow of the boat. Carved hull with portholes, and the top deck is decorated with two men in chains being flogged with the inscription around the upfront drapes, "NOVS CHEPIZZONES NOS CHAINES". The stern deck is an ocean scene with sailing ship and bird in flight with inscription "LE FROID ME CHASSE". Silver hinges and clasp. French, probably Dieppe, circa early 1700's. Overall good condition with two small cracks in front lid near hinges and inner base between grater and snuff container.
