Circa 1900 or Earlier of a Ceramic Smoking Pipe with a nicely painted fox hunting scene. Fox hunter on a horse with whip and dog following jumping over a creek in pursuit of a fox. The pipe is ceramic and the top is silver, probably plate and not sterling. Inside the pipe is a string that has a clasp at one end and two clasps on the other end that must have been attached to the pipe and connected to a belt, or something so it would not get lost. « Less

Sometimes the chic of an object lies not it its perfect preservation but rather in its marks of a well-used life. In its youth, this white-horn snuff box, formed to resemble a missal, was probably alive with brilliant enamels applied to the geometric designs engraved on its top and sides. Now it is smooth and worn like a piece of driftwood, the horn taking on the look of fossilized ivory. Approximately 3-3/4 inches by 2-1/2 inches by 7/8 of an inch deep, it is French and dated 1863 in Roman numerals on the front. (For a finely preserved example, see Trocadero item 418483.) « Less

Engraved with stylized designs of birds and flowers and highlighted with deep yellow stain and inlaid red enamel, this fine folk art piece dates from the mid-Nineteenth Century and measures approximately 4-1/8 inches by 2-3/4 inches and 7/8 of an inch deep. Created at the height of the Terror, this handsome and sturdy saddle-shaped snuff box bears the .950 purity mark and Paris hallmark for 1793, the year of the beheading of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette. Suggesting the striped silks favored by Revolutionary sympathizers, the interior is gilded, as originally were the broader stripes of the exterior. Incorporating fine integral hinges, it is in lovely condition and measures about 3-1/4 inches by 1-3/4 inches by one inch high.
