Circa 1890 Mafra Majolica Palissy wall plate with a snake biting a moth. A snail, beetle and two worms, all on mossy ground. Brown reverse with two hanging holes on the foot. Impressed maker''s mark ''M.MAFRA CALDAS PORTUGAL'' and inscribed ''8''. Generally good. No hairlines. Very minor flaking to the moss. Kiln effects: some over glazed manufacture chips to the foot; piece of kiln detritus to the snake. Restoration of the moth''s upper wings. Repaired crack to the rim and another to the foot. Retouching to the moss in places. 8ins diameter
