Circa 1890 Large Majolica Palissy wall plate with a snake attacking a lizard, which is retreating into its burrow. Surrounded by beetles, moths, grasshoppers and a frog around the edge. Brown ground. Cream and brown mottled reverse with two hanging holes on the foot rim. Three stilt marks and impressed maker''s mark ''M. MAFRA CALDAS PORTUGAL'' inside the foot rim. Good. No hairlines. No chips. Kiln effects: one small shrinkage crack to the frog''s front right leg. Pieces of kiln detritus to the front. One hind leg of each grasshopper restored. 12.5ins diameter
