Circa 1890 Cunha Majolica Palissy wall plate with a snake confronting a lizard which is emerging from inside its burrow. Surrounded by a worm, smaller lizard and two moths, all on mossy ground. Brown reverse with hanging hole on the foot. Cream glaze inside the foot along with three stilt marks and impressed maker''s mark ''JOSE A. CUNHA CALDAS RAINHA PORTUGAL''. Fair. No hairlines. Minor chipping to the moss. Kiln effects: over glazed shrinkage crack to the reverse. Head of worm and small lizard restored. Repair to neck of large lizard. Restored section of foot. Restored flake to wing tip of both moths. Restoration of snake tongue. 8.75ins diameter
