Circa 1890 Majolica Palissy wall plate with a snake attacking a lizard in the center, surrounded by a toad, two grubs, a beetle and a moth, all on mossy ground. Brown underside. Two hanging holes to the foot. Three stilt marks and impressed maker''s mark ''JOSE A. CUNHA CALDAS RAINHA PORTUGAL'' all inside the ochre foot. Good. No hairlines. No chips. Some flakes around the rim and under rim. Two small flakes to moth wing, and some flaking to the mossy ground. Kiln effects: some kiln detritus caught in the glaze to the moth''s wings, beetle''s front legs and toad''s mouth. Repaired shrinkage crack to the snake''s tail. 9.5ins diameter
