Wedgwood type stoneware / basalt / painted plaster as done by Wedgwood and other companies. 4 plaques, each depicting one of the 4 seasons. Magnificent allegorical carving in relief. Each measures 5 1/4inch in diameter. They are mounted in pairs on mustard velvet and framed. Wonderful detail and crisp quality to the moulding. Spring is a nubile maiden attended by putti and young boys. Wreaths and baskets of fruit lie in abandon. Summer is a pair of lovers, scythe in hand, amidst a field of corn, an older woman shears the sheathes. Each ear of corn is distinguishable and the features and folds of the clothes are fabulous. Autumn/Fall is a domestic scene: the mother with baby at her breast, man bringing home fruit and game that he has hunted and gathered. His dog at his side. Winter is depicted as an old couple warming themselves at a fire. Laundry hangs on a line and a cat hogs the best spot next to the warmth.Later information: these plaques are original designs by Bertel Thorvaldsen. A 19th century Danish sculptor considered on par with Canova. So no surprise they are by Royal Copenhagen. Status: For Sale Reference#: 839 Condition: See Description Year: See Description
