THIS ITEM IS SOLD -- Hessian Soldiers including VERY RARE matching set of fire tools comprising tongs, shovel, poker and stand, cast iron with what appears to be mostly original paint decoration in good condition. The steel log holders that extend from the backs of the figures have been replaced with exact duplicates of the originals and like the originals are removable for ease of transport. The best-known pattern of early 19th century cast andirons is that of Hessian Soldiers. Several different New England foundries produced these and there are minor size and detail differences among them. It is believed that they were inspired by the dislike of the mercenary troops brought here by the British in the American Revolution. Hence, they were being burned in effigy. American, circa 1900.
