Handsome nude male snake charmer seated and playing a flute while holding the snake, gazing at it and watching it move. The sculpture has a beautiful chocolate brown patina signed Thabard. Thabard ( Adolphe Martial Thabard, important French listed sculptor 1831-1905 ) Thabard studied under Duret one of the finest sculptors and teachers of the 19th century. Thabard exhibited at the Paris Salons from 1863 winning medals in 1863,1868,1872 including the silver medal at the Exposition Universelle of 1889. He became a Chevalier of the Legion d'Honneur in 1884. The subjects that Thabard sculptured were usually male nudes of large size this one being no exception. The figure is seated yet measures 25 inches tall. If he were standing this would be a 40 inch sculpture. From the back of the robe he is seated on to the front of his toe he measures 19 inches. Widest width 9-1/2 inches. The man's face is beautifully sculptured. He has long hair and wears a wreath of grape leaves. The detail, composition, and quality of this sculpture are unsurpassed.
