From a Georgia plantation: Extraordinary Charles X signed antique gilt bronze ( ormolu ) inkstand / deskset with blackamoors. Made by the Leblanc factory in 1827 in Paris, France. Measurements:12 inches accross the sides; 5 1/2 inches to top of heads. The set to hold all of your writing equipment in the early 19th century: Shaped base in ridges. The bottom has original wooden base with old felt lining. A pair of lidded urns on either side of a removable deeply cut glass inkwell with gilt bronze fitted lid. In front is a scalloped tray for holding various implements. Behind the inkwell is an openwork half wheel, flanked on either side by a spectacular pair of blackamoors, traditionally standing on a pair of pedestals. Each blackamoor, naked from the waist up, is holding a book in his outstretched arms. Feathered quill would lie accross the arms. Facial features and hair are superb. Original modelling and casting are of the best French quality. According to sources, the Leblanc foundry/factory existed for exactly one year, 1827, in Paris before being burned down. The wooden board under the stand has an embossed LEBLANC as well as inked information. The arms that support the urns on either side have embossed LEBLANC (remove urns and scrolls to find them). Condition of the whole set is very good or excellent considering the age of the piece.
