Victorian mantel ornament - a ladies' brass boot, with a cylinder behind it to hold spills. (Spills were waxed tapers or similar - you would light one of these from the fire in the grate below the mantel, and use it to light your candles, or pipe, cigarette, cigar etc. These were in common use before the invention of friction matches). An elegant survivor from the mid to late 1800s. Measurement: 7.7 cm high and 9 cm wide. Excellent condition.
