DESCRIPTION: When Candles were the only source of light, having a safe and handy storage box was important. Homemade candles were soft and easily bent so they had to be stored lying flat. Since they were made of beeswax and or tallow, mice and other vermin were attracted to them. We are pleased to offer this Outstanding Rare Early Shaker Community Size Large Dovetailed Candle Box from New England circa 1700s. The Candle Box was handmade of walnut wood and has a chamfered sliding lid top with a large finger grip notch. An extremely large Candle Box like this would have been a staple in the Shaker Community. The sides of Community Size Candle Box were finely dovetailed and the bottom was attached by peg joinery. The condition of the Candle Box shows it was well taken care of and handed down over the generations as a cherished heirloom. The New England Shaker Candle Box is heavy in weight and has beautiful grain lines. The Antique Candle Box is in excellent condition with age appropriate wear and patina adding character and authenticity to the early candle box.
