Meiji period Kutani porcelain jar for storing dry tea. The inner lid has a knob and fits inside the jar neck; the outer lid fits over the jar neck. The jar is predominately white and iron red with shades of pink, aqua, and taupe, and is lavishly embellished with gold. The inner lid has a chrysanthemum, plum blossoms, and clouds. The outer lid shows a tea ceremony. There is a band of flying cranes at the shoulder of the jar. All around the body of the jar are 11 medallions of various shapes with richly detailed scenes from Japanese fables. The jar is 14" tall, 11" wide, 5" wide at neck, and 5.5" wide at base.
